Denver Cop Charged With Trying To Tamper With Evidence
POSTED: 6:54 PM MST February 12, 2004
DENVER -- A Denver patrol officer is accused of crimes for which he normally
would arrest people.
Damon Finley, 31, is charged with bribery, conspiracy to commit theft and conspiracy
to commit tampering with evidence.
Police say he was conspiring with his father to tamper with evidence in a pending
drug case in exchange for money.
Police say Finley was arrested before any evidence was touched.
Finley's arrest comes after a lengthy investigation by the internal affair's
department, the district attorney's office and the FBI.
The investigation was launched in June 2002 after suspicions were aroused.
Finley was removed from duty in July 2003 and has been suspended without pay.
During the joint investigation, a federal grand jury also indicted Finley on
one count of making a false statement to FBI special agents. Finley will appear
in court on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. in that case. If convicted
on the federal charge Finley faces up to 5 years in federal prison and/or a
$250,000 fine.
The presumptive range for sentencing on the state charges is up to 12 years
in prison for a class 3 felony.
