Have you tried looking online to see if your player has a secret menu?
My son's had only PAL DVD but a search online brought the way into the
menu and switched off the region control, aswell as the thing which
stops you playing copies, and his is only a cheap dvd. You just type
something like 'goodmans 137dvd secrete menu' or 'sony 345dvd hack' etc
etc.
