Machismo is a form of masochism
Little crosses in long rows on a manicured lawn
where all the flowers and the young men have gone
lest we forget where they buried the bones of the dead
who rushed into god-foresaken lands
where the angels feared to tread
Crushing beer cans with their heads
Crushing their heads when the army jeep rolled over
Pounding heads against a wall, endlessly repeating the process
until scrambled brains had no sense left at all
These are portraits of platoons
of innocent, patriotic puppies, whipped with propaganda
until they are obedience-schooled full-grown dogs of war
Proud to have what it takes to keep going back for more
Jumping with enthusiasm for their own splintered bones
Bravely growling, never daring to question their Generals
Learning to think primarily with their genitals
Charging like bulls on cue to the waving of a flag
Happy to be party to it, with tails that vigorously wag
The masochism of dog-fighting leads to cataclysm
It is an age-old affair, still just as true
It is a dance similar to the tango
that usually involves two
Bless our boys, they take more abuse than chew-toys
May there someday be a truce, to bring end to your self-abuse
Until then, we are behind you, oil the way
Fighting men and keen-eyed sharp-shooters
scraped off bloody sidewalks with trooper-scoopers
Making noble sacrifice by sticking arms into meat grinders

was used for illegal gas [and] oil smuggling. We intentionally did it
in such a way to disrupt the flow, but not cause any environmental
damage. We did not want to do what Saddam did. You're not going
to see burning oil fields. You're not going to see oil spills
into the water. We very selectively and very precisely went after
a point in that target that accomplished our goal.

BURKE, Colonel Edward J. Retired, AUS Infantry of Springfield, VA,
formerly of Jamaica Plain, MA, suddenly on August 5, 2010
He was a decorated combat veteran (VN) and served with the
1st Infantry Division. He spent a second tour of duty as
a Military Advisor to the South Vietnamese. In 1982,
Col.. Burke graduated from the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA.
In 1972 Col. Burke established the 28th Infantry Association
(Black Lions) which he tirelessly maintained as President.
For the past 12 years, Col Burke had also served as the
Executive Director for the Society of the First Infantry Division
working to perpetuate the memory of the 1st Infantry Division,
US Army and to honor the service and sacrifice of its soldiers
and units. Col. Burke will be interred with Full Military Honors
at Arlington National Cemetery on November 15, 2010 following
an 8:45am Funeral Mass at The Old Post Chapel, Ft. Myer.
