Because - even if they were - the "real" soldiers would kick their punky
little asses. In Vietnam, the drippy sentimentalists and gung-ho monkeys
were routinely disliked by the soldiers who - after all - were best off
with a rather pragmatic view of the conflict: we do what we're told
(within reason) and try and get out with all our parts. It is the
privilege of the non-combatants to be so grotesquely sentimental about
the horror of war. All Keith sees is a glorious mission: the real
soldiers see bullets and bodies, and - for most of them - life will
never be quite the same again, even if they physically survive. They
don't need Keith's insane tears and prayers: they need to get out alive.
And no prayers to an imaginary deity will do that for them, most
especially those emanating from the mouth of such denatured noodles such
as the one Keith uses to support his tinfoil beret.
