plants need much water or care. But "sprinkling the ground with
citric acid" did seem to bolster the plants' ability to suck up

As for why some plants absorb uranium, that's still a mystery,
says Ulmer-Scholle. It could be that the plants use the metal to
create pigments. One way she hopes to test that possibility is

weekends, it's tough work kicking off World War III, so I gotta

Now, I realize that you were all looking forward to the month-
long financial boom that occurs whenever I grace you sweaty
yokels with my presence. My visits are pretty much the economic
foundation of this pisspot rathole town, which I can only assume
used to scrape by on bartering shiny pebbles and tumbleweeds.
But ever since 2001, it's like Christmas in August for all of
you charmingly backwater simpletons.

In Aztec mythology, Huitzilopochtli ("Hummingbird of the South",
"He of the South", "Hummingbird on the Left (South)", or "Left-
Handed Humming Bird" ? huitzil is the Nahuatl word for
hummingbird), was a god of war and a sun god and the patron of
the city of Tenochtitlan.
He was also the national god of the Aztecs. As well as being a
god of war and a sun god, he was also a god of death, young men,
warriors, storms, and a guide for journeys.
In the Nahua culture, many names have an esoteric meaning, known
only to some. According to Laurette Sejourne, in his book
"Burning water" (sacred war) in Nahua maps, the South is at the
left, and in the South is the paradise of the sun. Also, the
souls of the dead warriors return to the earth as butterflies
and hummingbirds, so the esoteric meaning of Huitzilopochtli is
"the warrior soul from the paradise."

According the Ramirez Codex, in Tenochtitlan up to 60 prisioners
were sacrificed at the end of the festivities. Sacrifices were
also made in other Aztec cities, including Tlatelolco,
Xochimilco and Texcoco. This was one of the more important Aztec
festivals, for which the people prepared for the whole month.
People fasted, or ate very little; a statue of the god was made
with amaranth (huatli) seeds and honey, and at the end of the
month, it was cut into small pieces so everybody could eat a
little piece of the god. The similarity with Christian rituals
prompted the Spanish authorities to forbid the cultivation of
amaranth. After the conquest, some aspects of these festivities
were incorporated into the traditions of the Nativity
The Nahuas believed the world would end like the other previous
four creations. Every fifty-two years, they feared the world
would end. Under Tlacaelel, Aztecs believed that they could give
strength to Huitzilopochtli with human blood and thereby
postpone the end of the world, at least for another fifty-two
years. Ironically, the Aztec empire fell at the end of this
cycle.

Go back over to the parrot and give him the bag of Amaranth you

That's the pass word. Go back to the guard and give him the
correct password. He will let you pass into the storage
building.
Once inside, turn right and go forward twice. Click on the jars
of poison. You must break them. Look around until you find a
stick lying amidst some timbers. Break the pottery with the
stick...only two or three will break. After you break the
pottery, try to leave the building. You will encounter that
nasty "Mountain Head" again at the entrance. He tries to kill
you immediately, but Chimalli beans him and tells you to run.
Unfortunately, you aren't quite fast enough and are confronted
by Black Flower. He tells you that you can either choose to
pour poison in the aqueduct and kill all the people, or you can
drink it yourself and save them. Of course, you must choose to
drink it. You are the "good guy", after all.
When you are recovered enough from the poisoning scene, run to
the aqueduct and jump in. There will be a dream sequence. You
wake up in the home of Quilaztli, the old doctor. Talk to him.
Chimalli brought you to Quilaztli. The guards are looking for
you. Quilaztli tells you about Three Rabbit, Black Flower and
the treacherous priestess, Papatzin. He wants to prepare enough
antidote for all the poison. He needs the right herbs first.
You must go to the Chinampas and find these special herbs.
Go out the door. Go right twice, then left. Go forward to the
Chinampas (river channels) and get in the canoe. Go forward
twice, left twice and turn left to go ashore near the grass hut.
Turn left and go up the path. Turn right and use your knife to
dig up the roots of the orange flowers. You only need to do
this once. Turn around and go back to Quilaztli's house with
the herbs. You must take a gourd of the antidote medicine to
Woman Serpent. Three Rabbit has poisoned him and he is dying.
Go into the next room and find the gourd of antidote sitting on
the floor.
Go out the door and go left and then forward to access the map
to Tenochtitlan Square.
Whoops! Black Flower shows up and you are captured again!

Amaranth comes originally from the Aztecs and from China. It is
a member of the pigweed family and is grown at lower altitudes

Busch's new play, "Queen Amarantha," now at the WPA, is a treat
from beginning to end. It's a self-described history play, set
in a time long past, somewhere in Europe: it sort of smashes
together Shakespeare, Marlowe, Webster, Sir Walter Scott, and
whoever wrote those campy movies we all watched on rainy
Saturdays in one glorious mush of plot twists, mistaken
identities, power struggles, and sword fights. Serious issues
such as gender identity and its impact on political structures
are there, too, but they're handled so deftly as to only
complement the story line and offer up this banquet on wry.
Briefly, Amarantha, daughter of a tyrant king, becomes monarch
upon his death. Yet she has been denied the one totem which,
to her, indicates true succession, the crown worn by countless
generations of monarchs. How Amarantha discovers herself as a
woman and a ruler is the sum of the plot. Such Shakespearean
themes as the pure natural world versus the pompous world of the
Court are there too, and you're sure to notice a tip of the
farthingale to your favorite classics.
Though serious about gender and sexuality, Busch offers up this
play, for the most part, in good fun. He is ably abetted by a
superlative cast which includes Ruth Williamson, Marcus Lovett,
Karen Phillips and Carl Andress. The terrific set and wonderful
period non-specific costumes are by Eduardo Sicangco.
