The next day, the entire building was illuminated with nuclear
power.
"It was the first time ever that a nuclear reactor made that
much energy," tour guide Don Miley said.
Chalk writing on the wall bearing the names of the men who were
there at the time remains as a reminder of the historic event.
In 1996, the women who worked at the plant brought a plaque with
their names to EBR-I, and today it hangs on the wall next to the
chalk marks.
The reactor used uranium-235 as a fuel. During the process,
plutonium-239, a usable fuel, was created.
In today's commercial reactors, 99 percent of the fuel remains
unused in the nuclear waste, Lindsay said.
"We're using less than one percent of a natural resource to
generate electricity," Miley said.
Part of the reason breeder reactors didn't become popular was
politics, Miley said.
After the fuel rods were used in the reactor, they were moved to
a storage area built into the floor. The rods were left for
about six months before being moved again.
The recording system at the storage area was a blackboard with
chalk marks, much different than the recording systems of today.
At EBR-I, there were no computers or calculators.
"You used slide rules for the big calculations," Lindsay said.

Poe intuited that his works at bottom said nothing, or more
accurately that what they did express could never stand as
beacons of truth for others. In "The Lighthouse," his last and
unfinished tale, the narrator imitates as much in his
observation about the lighthouse he occupies: "It seems to me
that the hollow interior at the bottom should have been filled
in with solid masonry ?. The basis on which the structure rests
seems to me to be chalk."
Poe's oeuvre also offers no literary foundation on which to
imagine an other American culture, let alone a literary canon in
which he might have thought to include himself. But if he stays
outside of such, one has to wonder if that situation isn't what
whatever a United States culture means was and is all along,
from the Republic's beginning.
