The Puritans didn't come to the conclusion that life is all about pennance
and suffering by pure reason alone. They observed even in their day that
people such as Buddy Holley and Jannis Joplin, who advocated a life of
fun and enjoyment, all died young and tragically, whereas insufferable pain
like Perry Como and Dame Edith Sitwell just seemed to go on forever.
