I'm not sure sho the publishers were but.. some years ago (10? 15?) there
was an edition with blue spines and picture covers. I've seen these in
bookshops on and off ever since. From what I could see after opening one, I
supposed they were UK reprints of the Grove Press editions. The content
seemed to be the same. I thought they were some kind of academic publisher.
Does anyone know for sure?
I got a set of the GP editions in hardback out of some bookshop off the
Tottenham Court Rd years before. They had a stack of remaindered copies. I
gave away my old p/b edition of v1.
These are the details of the set.
v1 753pgs Biography & criticism, Justine, Philosophy in the Bedroom, Eugenie
de Franval and others.
v2 799pgs More criticism inc S De Beauvoir, 120 days of Sodom and others.
v1&v2 "Compiled & Translated by Austryn Wainhouse & Richard Seaver"
v3 1205pgs Juliette & Bibliography. Translated by AW.
Justine is OK, v1 is better for PitB and the background. 120 days is vastly
over-rated it descends into a catalogue much too quickly. Juliette is the
masterwork. If you can't get all 3, you can get by on just v3.
