When the glowing in the sky disappeared we went below deck; I
couldn't sleep. At daylight we had a light breakfast then a few
of us boarded an LSI that ferried us back to Johnston Island.
An elaborate water sprinkler-deluge system had been erected on
Sand (bird) island that had huge water pumps driven by diesel
engines. The engine and pumps were started remotely a few
minutes prior to the detonation so that thousands and thousands
of native birds would be soaked with sea water, thus preventing
most of them from attempting to fly when startled by the
extremely bright light, the shock wave, and heat.
After offloading from the LSI we were given orders and
instructions that were to be carried out immediately; each man
gather 2930 burlap bags and tie wire, then break into groups of
2 men, get into small aluminum boats with outboard motors, and
motor around the atoll to pick up all the birds that did not
survive the nuclear blast, stuff them in the burlap bags until
full, then wire the end of the bag closed and sink the bag to
the ocean floor. ( Frankly, as the hair on my body was singed
from the blast, it had really burnt the birds feathers). The
watering system was reasonably effective. However we did gather
about a thousand or so maimed, floundering, or dead birds. All
of the clean-up gathering of the birds was done before the
visiting elected Congressmen, and appointed public officials
returned to Johnston island.
Quote from the Honolulu newspaper,
"this is the way the world ends'
this is the way the world ends,
this is the way the world ends.... "
There would not have been time to finish T.S. Elliot's poem. For

THE BEST-SELLER IS A BIRD GUIDE
If you are what you read, there is probably no better bellwether
than Book Ends, the only bookstore in Ely. The best-seller there
is still the same as it was before last September -- the Audubon
Society's "Sibley Guide to Birds." Tom Clancy and "Lord of the
Rings" are also on the shelves, but there's nothing resembling
the terrorism or Middle East analyses that fill display tables
in San Francisco and Berkeley.
"Nobody's ever asked for any books about Osama-bin-whatsit or
any of those other fellers here, so I never ordered any," owner
Faye Mullins says with a grin.
Across the street at the Hotel Nevada, retired prison guard
Margaret Ferguson says that even if her neighbors knew every
last detail about Al Qaeda's next move, it wouldn't make one
whit of difference. In fact, soon enough nothing will make much
difference because terrorism is just a tiny part of a big story,
she says while she methodically jams nickels into the Winning
Touch slot machine.
"Armageddon is coming, it says so in the Good Book, and this is
as good a place to be as any," Ferguson says. She's the fourth
person in the past three hours to voice the same fear in random
conversations along Main Street, and when told that she nods
sagely.
"Yep, we're no fools here," Ferguson murmurs, squinting up and
taking a long pull off her cigarette. She turns back to her
machine. "Armageddon. Mark my words."

"The idea was to see if rock pigeon lice can hang onto feathers
from different species of birds," Bush says.
Bush placed each bird on a tether made of fishing line and, one
at a time, let them fly above a University of Utah football
field until they landed. In a related experiment, she painlessly
removed feathers with the transplanted feather piece and taped
them to an electric fan rotating at 50 mph for 20 minutes.
Both parts of the experiment showed most of the rock pigeon lice
stuck to feathers, no matter what species of bird was the source
of the feather transplant.
"I had one louse on the fan for seven hours," Bush says. "I gave
up before it did."
Normally, a bird's beak "is like a guillotine," Bush says. ?It
chops off parts of the lice and crushes or slices them to remove
them.?
After two months, the scientists counted the number of lice on
each bird, and found big lice couldn't survive on small birds
because they couldn't hide in the feathers.

The birds were having beers
Too many, to think very clear
It started with an Alfred Hitchcockatoo or two
The birds did breed and drink more brew
Until there was a long roster of crowing roosters
An abundance of Bubbas and rocket boosters
and bitter old biddies, to do their bidding
To prove to the world, that they were not just kidding
Cackling, and frantically taking to flight
Itching and ready, to start a big fight
This noisy and growing gaggle of geese
Thought not of dark powers that they might release
While the hens fussed about, with much ado
The quiet fox staged a coup, in the chicken coop

Old Birds
From ABC News:
A F-14 Tomcat strike fighter crashed into the Iraqi desert
during a bombing mission early Wednesday after a mechanical
failure caused its engines to fail, senior Navy officers said.
Old bird...yea...but it kicks the crap out of any F18....it's
called legs, firepower, capability, just plain old kick ass and
take names rock and roll. Speed and power kill and the F14 has
both. It has been the workhorse in Afghanistan and in Iraq for
the Navy. The F18 is a gas guzzling little pig that needs to be
tanked after takeoff and several more times to hit the target
and come back. Heaven forbid if it has to bingo.. The F14s are
just loitering over Iraq and nailing them them with JDAMS. After
all it can sit over those targets for hours, if need be, before
needing to refuel.
It carries more weight and is the best fighter bomber in the US
arsenal, bar none (close air support I would prefer the A-10 or
the A-6). Plus, it still has the best fighter radar system in
the world.

you can't herd chickens... from the Wall Street Journal
By SCOTT KILMAN
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
Out of the gloom and dust of a chicken house as long as a
football field, a PH2000 emerged. Hundreds of fluffy white birds
tipped their heads and stared. The nine-ton, 42-foot-long
contraption crept closer, slowly sweeping a low metal ramp back
and forth through the flock like a giant scythe. The ramp gently
nudged the birds in their chests. They lifted their feet to get
out of its way, only to find themselves standing on the ramp
itself. As more birds stepped on, they crowded one another
toward a conveyor belt.
Whoosh! Each chicken was whisked up the belt into a small
compartment, where a burst of air pushed it into a metal chute.
Within seconds, the bird came to rest, blinking, still on its
feet inside a wire cage.
In the past year, chicken companies including Tyson, Perdue
Farms Inc. and Pilgrim's Pride Corp. have snapped up scores of
the machines, which cost around $200,000. Today, about 5% of U.S.
birds are caught mechanically, according to industry officials.
The machines come from manufacturers including Bright Coop Inc.,
Techno-Catch LLC and Anglia Autoflow Ltd.
