in fact everything is as we left it yesterday
the mother and the father are sitting quietly together
on the porch where the sun no longer sets on a gothic
plain
no sight or sound of creature nor place
it calls its inn
a shadow never moves
though people may endlessly wonder
what ruined a perfectly ordinary sky
if birds and snakes could come down from their trees
and perhaps the rain would fall, just a little essence
of wet, then--oh yes--now we are beginning to imagine it...
a summer crane descends and takes with it a child of nine
no sound is made for in the distance the hillside is
practically sleeping and a little rain cloud is
forming from abyss
now something: a thick hollow sound, a beating
drum, the hooves of ton-tons
lightning strikes: the mother and father have finished
another meal; as as the world turns has gone off the air they
are merely waiting to die, perhaps of a new plague or the
execution of drawers
