With the amount of money home computing pumps into the economic structure
of *any* nation? I don't think there's any fear the goose that lays the
golden eggs is going to be slaughtered anytime soon.
However, DO expect an increase in egg production in order to enjoy using
your addictive bit of technology. People got used to the convenience and
fun of e-mail in no small measure because it was free - should even a
nominal "1-cent each" charge ever be introduced, I'm sure many e-junkies
would accept that - especially if they were sold the idea it "prevents
spam".
File sharing is the same - since you can't eradicate it totally, smart
money is on how to exploit it - even if that means pushing through laws
that pretty much guarantee you have the "market" under tight control.
Of course, people will have to be sold on the idea
"pay-per-listen/download/burn" actually benefits the artists by eliminating
that nasty "net piracy" - even if that's just destined to be replaced by a
different "thief" - in this case, those I refer to as... "the piRIAAtes".
