Well, it's all nice n' all to have a natural sense of timing...but it's
even nicer if everyone in the band shares that timing.
I use a metronome for a variety of reasons --the biggest being that it's
the only way to guage your progress and push yourself forward.
You start a piece at 50 bpm and it's difficult. Pretty soon though you've
nailed that and you move on to 60. Then 70...etc. Next thing you know,
you're amazing yourself playing that same piece at 150 like it's supposed
to be played.
But I prefer to practice with a drum machine --because in a band machine I
play to the drums, and it makes more sense to approximate a real world
situation. Playing with a drum machine gives me several timing references
(kick, snare, hat) to play off of...
Anyway, the point is, a metronome is a tool, a starting point, not the end
result...
