Sayer finally moves in
June 30, 2005
BRITISH singer Leo Sayer relocated to Sydney last November but it is only
this week that he's finally moved his stuff in.
Speaking to the singer from his eastern Sydney home today, a removalist van
arrived bringing the remainder of his belongings from the UK.
"I haven't given up all the rest of the world," said Sayer, who will embark
on a national tour next month.
"But I certainly want to make this home."
Famous for songs like You Make Me Feel Like Dancing and Moonlighting, the
57-year-old last had a top 10 hit in 1982.
Newspaper reports last year suggested Sayer was moving to Australia in
protest over the state of the British music industry.
Sayer today said UK record company bosses are more interested in signing
contestants from TV talent scout programs, such as Pop Idol and The X
Factor.
"In this country (Australia), people who are music stars are judged for
their music still," he said.
"We have a problem back in the UK and Europe where you fall into a certain
kind of category and for some reason I am in the Cliff Richard category.
"I am put in the sort of TV celebrity category and that is not where my
heart is."
Sayer had a string of hits in the 1970s including When I Need You and How
Much Love.
But he fell out of fashion in the early '80s, although he has continued to
make music.
"We are all really cock-a-hoop about the material," Sayer said of his latest
album, Voice in My Head.
"It is really a totally creative album, very recognisably Leo."
The album was recorded in Denmark this year and will be released nationally
on July 10.
