The music video begins by showing a detective and a policeman pursuing a
criminal. They wind up dangling on the edge of a building during the chase.
The policeman loses hold and falls to his death, this being of great shock
and sadness to his detective partner (played by lead singer Mike Patton).
Patton begins counseling for the fear of heights he developed as a result of
the incident. Working with a counselor to get over his fear of heights,
therapy involves him climbing a small stool in his living room, where he
faints.
The lyrics of the song bring attention to the fact that all people have
problems from time to time in life. Yes, we all must have compassion when
tragedies occur, and we wish they didn't happen, but we must get over these
problems and put them behind us. We must forgive, and do our best to forget
about problems of the past, not to dwell on them.
Song lyrics begin;
"This is getting old
and so are you.
Everything you know
and never knew.
Will run through your fingers
just like sand.
Enjoy it while you can."
Meaning; Live your life now. Make the most of what you have now.
Song lyrics;
"So raise it up and lets propose a toast.
To the thing that hurts you most."
Meaning; Forget the hurts of the past. Put them behind you. Kiss that hurt.
Make a toast to that hurt, if you have to. Make jokes about the hurt and
forget about it. Whatever it takes to put problems of the past behind you.
Toast to it, or laugh at it. Forget it.
At the same time Patton works to overcome his fear of heights, the wife of
the policeman is herself very depressed after her husband died. Patton
begins to watch over the woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to stop her from
possibly committing suicide.
