Long before Britney, Christina, Paula Abdul and shortly before Madonna's
breakout, one of the hottest female singers on the charts was Laura Branigan
with such hits as "Gloria", "Self Control", etc.
Branigan was out in the early 1980s around the time a string of other female
artists such as Belinda Carlyle, Pat Benatar, Kim Carnes, Debroah Harry in
Blondie, etc were busy making hits alongside her.
Most of her TV appearances included on the biggest music shows on TV back then
"American Bandstand", "Solid Gold", etc.
She managed to belt out one of her biggest hits "Self Control" into a Music
Video MTV frequently played.
Many of her mediocre hits included: Spanish Eddie, Solitaire, Ti Amo, The
Lucky One, The Power Of Love (which even Celine Dion remade), "How Am I
Supposed to Live Without You" (which Michael Bolton wrote for her---then later
sang himself), etc.
She managed to earn a Grammy nomination with her first hit "Gloria", a song
which is still popular today.
Most of her style of music is usually compared in the media with Donna
Summer's.
It's been a month since Branigan's death on August 26th but I could not help
but post on how much I enjoyed most of her music. Through the years, I managed
to buy all of her CDs (will double check to see if I missed any) and even
though have a "perferred" album of hers over her others, still enjoyed the joy
she brought when listening to her songs.
Throughout the years, my whole family (father, sister, mother, me) was a fan,
including the kids we have here today, which shows your music is enjoyably
timeless.
Rest In Peace, Laura Branigan.
And thanks for touching our lives with your music.
