fair enough, but what would i call this category then?? "western
popular music"?? does that include broadway?  and i think the ethnic
varieties should be thought of separately from the rest of these
styles, since they seem taking cues from the 'western' varieties..

also, there is grout's history of western music, but are there similar
volumes which encompass all these styles?? i get the impresison that
you could find a book on hip hop, or on prog rock, but not one on
'popular music' in general which would touch on both...
