Officially, it's 'dwarfs', but Tolkien used 'dwarves' and 'dwarvish'
(instead of 'dwarfish') and his version has become the common usage. He
pointed out that had the language evolved slightly differently it might
have become 'dwerrow', but didn't give his rationale for that (as far as
I've seen, if anyone has references for such a development or similar
words I'll be interested)...
