Do you mean that he thinks the verb "to mistake" does not exist? If so,
tell him to look in a dictionary of the English language (or even
American). It is present as a noun ("I made a mistake"), a verb ("You
can mistake one person for another"; "I was mistaken when I thought the
word did not exist"; "It's easy to mistake a dove for a pigeon"), or an
adjective ("A clear case of mistaken identity").
