As verbs, "gamble" and "wager" mean almost the same thing. Usually
"gamble" refers to the action of gambling in general. "Wager" is
usually more specific, referring to a particular bet. You might say,
"I'll wager that the Yankees will beat the Dodgers". If you like to
gamble, you might refer to yourself as a "gambler", but probably not a
"wagerer".
And "wager" can also be a noun, similar to "bet". "Gamble" cannot.
You could say, "I placed a wager at the racetrack".
But, "I placed a gamble at the racetrack", doesn't make any sense.
