hello sarah,
the official site for xbox/xbox360 (from microsoft) has a list of
original xbox games that are playable on the new xbox 360.
please note that the site gives detailed instructions on how to play
old xbox games on the new xbox 360 console (you simply have to view
the "backward compatibility" section on the left-hand-side of the web
page below, to view other sub-sections such as "how to play xbox games
on xbox 360", "backward compatibility faq", "technical support and
known issues" etc.).
to see the list of original xbox games (which are playable on xbox
360), simply go to
http://www.xbox.com/en-us/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm
you simply have to compare your list of xbox games (that your family
owns) with the list on the web page above, to help you make a decision
whether to purchase an xbox 360 or not.
now, on to ps3 supporting older ps1 and ps2 games....the vast number of
games in the ps1 and ps2 game catalogs (including upcoming titles) are
being verified for play compatibility with ps3. to check if a
specific ps1 or ps2 game is playable on ps3, simply use the "backwards
compatibility status search" (from sony's official playstation3 site)
at
http://www.us.playstation.com/support/compatiblestatus
the above web page has a ps3 backward compatibility search engine,
where you can enter the title of a ps1 or ps2 game to check if that
specific game title is playable on ps3. so, you can enter ps1 and ps2
game titles (from your family's game library) into the search engine,
to see if they are playable on ps3 and this can help you decide if you
want to buy a ps3....
hope that helps....
regards,
gods-invi
