We won't know until next spring sometime, by the sounds of the
current rumors leaking out of id. By then, we'll have at least one
new and improved round of video chips/cards coming out of the
top vendors, and until we know what the pricing and performance
is on those new products, we couldn't say. Currently, if you're going
to buy a card today, in anticipation of Doom3 coming out sometime
next year, I'd definitely go with either the high-end Radeon or the
GeForce FX 5900, and get a card with 256MB of video RAM on it.
I've heard that Half-Life 2 and Doom3 will actually be making use
of all that RAM, once they come out. You'll be looking at anywhere
from $350-$450+, depending on how good a shopper you are and
what part of the world you live in.
