1950's. Stephen wrote about his life in letters to a penpal, and then
in a secure blog, in case he lost his memory again, in the master
computer in his school for gifted students, which he started attending
in 2016 in a new incarnation, until his death. Now his son Solomon is
attending the same school, and is writing in his own secure blog for
his future incarnations.
All characters are fictitious, even if some of them might have names
that belong to some actual people, or act like people we know.
Solomon is 36 in this story, in the Spring of 2062.

Harahm said to me, "Mom said I'm going to school?" I said, "But
you're here." He said, "I'm really going. See? This direction." I said,
"Very slowly, I see. Step by step, will take a while." He said, "I
could use the Port-All." I said, "Not without permission. You do have
it now." He said, "Wow!" He ran to the room for that, and into the
doorframe. I was there at the school when he came out of the frame
there. He said, "That's not fair!" I said, "That's a good name for
life; 'not fair'. Get used to it." He suddenly became serious, and
said, "I know. It's not fair I can have you as a father, and others
can't." I said, "But we do help them a lot. But in your case, it IS
fair. Here's Conner. He'll be unfair for you." Suspicious Harahm said,
"What way unfair?" I said, "Students don't usually have a personal
mentor. You do. Him." Harahm said, "Oh. Where do I put him?" Conner
said, "Oh, not another one!" Grins. Hugs, and I shifted out.
I said to Elise, "A red hair world. Want in?" She said, "Sure I do!"
I ported her to me. She said, "A moment please. Got it. This whole
world in mind thing is VERY useful. Compare notes?" We did. I said,
"You've got it. Want solo?" She said, "Horrible question. You know we
to scratch that itch?" She grinned, and said, "Deal!" I directed her
mind, and we appeared in the area, and walked to a playground where
some parents and kids were arguing. We showed no auras to normals. The
two psionic kids could see ours, and stopped and stared at us. We
looked normal for us, but with my golden hair, and her blonde hair, we
did look different to them, so they kept their eyes on us.
I said to Elise, "Interesting game. It seems to involve mostly
yelling and arm waving." She said, "I think that one was was also
engaging in foot stomping. And that one is an expert in facial
gymnastics!" I pointed, and said, "Check out the eyebrows on that one.
Very mobile." They turned and looked at him. I said to them, "Would
somebody inform us of the rules of this game?" A man said, "Some people
here accused my children of cheating in a game." I said, "Oh. Is there
a death penalty attached to that?" He said, "No! What kind of question
see what you mean." Some were nodding.
Elise said, "Did they cheat?" He said, "No, they didn't!" She said,
"Did you see what caused them to be accused of cheating?" He said, "No,
not, if you didn't see it? Why would you call others liars for what you
can't know the truth of, without proof? What kind of a man are you?" He
said, "Who ARE you?" I said, "She asked you first. Politeness dictates
that you answer that before asking your own question." He looked
around, and said, "I think I've acted irresponsibly." I said, "I'm a
father. I do understand about defending our children. Would somebody
describe what actually happened?"
It turned out that a ball had moved on its own. Elise said, "So, it
was the BALL that cheated. Hmm, how do you punish a ball? Send it to
its room? Does it actually have one?" Kids laughed. That made the
parents smile. I said, "Sometimes objects just won't do what we want
them to, and sometimes they do, in unexpected ways. When I was eleven,
I threw a ball so hard, the boy who was to catch it, was lucky he
didn't see it. Not so lucky was the person some distance away, who was
sitting on a high platform watching swimmers. He almost jumped out if
it and into the water, when the ball hit that tower with a loud bang."
Chuckles. I said to Elise, "He never knew what caused it, until years
later when I told him. Dex." She said, "Oh! I wish I had been there to
see that!" I said, "I almost strained something trying not to laugh."
They laughed.
I said, "I think there's been enough excitement here today. How many
of you hope the ball moves by itself tomorrow?" The kids did, with
grins. We said our farewells, and walked away. Our target family
followed us, so we waited for them. We walked for a while. The man
said, "You live near here?" Elise said, "No we don't." I said, "We came
here to see you and your family, in our professional capacity." He
said, "Oh, what work do you do?" Elise said, "You just saw one part of
it. Conflict resolution." He said, "I have to admit, that was well
done!" I said, "Thank you. We don't usually get that from our er,
victims." He laughed.
We went inside their home, and the kids, boy and girl, told their
mother what had happened. She looked afraid, at the mention of the ball
moving by itself. Elise said to her, "There's nothing to be afraid of.
We know all about it. Let's all sit and discuss this." She started to
send the kids to their rooms, when I said, "They should be here so they
can tell you if we lie." She said, "That's real?" I said, "It is, and
easily tested." Father said, "It is? How?" Elise said, "You're both
smart enough to know how to do that. Tell lies and truth to them, and
they'll tell you which is which. What could be simpler? That sure is
better than accusing them of lying about it, without actually testing
it. Think how YOU would feel about that." They looked a little unhappy.
I said, "And they did cheat, but unknowingly. The ball didn't move in
its own. It had a little help. You've seen it here. No, it's not a bad
thing, except when it happens when you don't want it to." Kids nodded
They laughed. Elise said to them, "Better in a good rhythm." More
laughter. I said to the parents, "We're also teachers." They smiled.
She said, "I'm not surprised by that, now." Father said, "They keep
looking at you strangely. Do you know why?" I said, "It's not the hair.
Ask them. It's going to be interesting." He did, and the girl said,
"Their lights around their heads. MUCH bigger than everybody else." I
said, "Called the aura." He said, "I thought that was just a fantasy."
I said, "Don't think that." Grins.
Elise said, "Our auras are so powerful, that everybody can see them,
am, but not to Elise. My wife, although very powerful, isn't able to
teleport between dimensions." Elise said, "I'm not married. Sol, did
you have to tell them that so early in the meeting?" I said, "I didn't
have to at all. I just felt like it. Why don't you tell them something
unusual, to make us even?" She said, "What? That we work directly for
God?" I said, "Well, that was one. Better than mine, in unbelievably, I
think. You were always very competitive." She said, "You'd better
believe it." We grinned at each other.
Boy said, "They didn't lie!" I said, "We're not able to lie." Father
said, "So you really can teleport. Other paranormal abilities?" I said,
"All. We have schools for those who qualify. Now you know why we're
really here." Kids shouted, "Please!" Elise said, "Strange as it may
seem, we've never had an unwilling student." Big grins. I said to the
kids, "You haven't told them what you feel from us." Girl said,
"They're full of love!" Boy said, "They're holding it in, or the whole
world will feel it." I said, "You know they wouldn't lie in front of
us." Mother grinned, and said, "Great! You would know. Telepathy, too?"
I said, "They have the emotion sense. When what you say doesn't match
aura. But I do have to tell you we know what you're thinking." Elise
said, "I know all, as God knows, on each world I visit. Solomon knows
all, everywhere. Yes, God made us able to do that, so we could do our
work better for Him. It's not fun to know all, I tell you!"
Mother said, "Will our children have that?" I said, "Only the very
best of our students can reach that level, and if they do, that knowing
all state must be accepted by choice. Adult choice." Nods. Father said,
"You know all. Will they reach that level?" I said, "It's not good to
tell students what will happen. That could actually prevent it. Hmm,
you didn't know you were testing us." He grinned, and said, "You do
know that!" I said, "You still have a belief problem. Knowing all,
isn't just about the present. It's of the past as well. Name a time and
place, And I'll show it to you. Not that one!" He was very embarrassed,
and said, "Telepathy confirmed." I showed him in primary school
wrestling. Boy said, "You were good, Dad!" Father said, "Thanks. So
it's all true. That wasn't from my mind. I didn't see it that way."
Wife said, "Oh! I understand now."
He said, "You said schools. Which one, and where?" I said, "We have
different schools for different planetary environments. Of the schools
your children are compatible with, the one on my original world has
most of the most advanced students, and I teach there. So, they'll be
seeing me sometimes." Took them a while to unravel that. Elise said,
"You did that on purpose!" I said, "Sure. Do I ever not do that?" She
said, "Don't be so intelligent when I'm trying to win a point with
you." They laughed. I said, "Elise was and still is, the most
competitive of my students. No big surprise here, I see." Chuckles.
I said, "There is no set time for graduation, but it usually takes
four years. They can come back and visit here periodically with
assistance, until they can do it on their own. Not often, though. Such
changes of environment, until they learn to do it themselves, can be
unsettling. That would interfere in our way of teaching. There is
something we need to do now. Should I assume you don't want a repeat of
the scene in the park?" Father said, "Great assumption!" Grins. I said,
"This is a memory crystal. It contains commands that act like
compulsions and restrictions. There are two sets. One prevents
accidental use of psionics. Think about it. You really don't want to do
some odd things in your sleep. Yes, it's happened. Not any more!"
Grins. I said, "And the other set prevents unjust use. Anger is
dangerous for us." He said "They should have it!" I said, "All our
students do. I started with it, myself. The student sees them first,
and then has to agree to them, before the crystal works. The man who
invented this, had a very good reason for it." Boy said, "Tell us!"
I said, "I knew you would say that. The founder of our first school
learned how to levitate. The boys in a sleepover with him, didn't know
he could do that, until the morning, when they found him sleeping in
the air. Good thing the window was closed. They didn't quite jump out
of their clothes then, because they weren't wearing any. They didn't
sleep that way. His brother woke him up, and well, that became even
more interesting." Grins. Elise said, "Later, one of his students
teleported into the swimming pool he had been dreaming about. If he had
like?" I projected the cat-boy. I said, "You might meet him in your
second year. When you hug him, you won't want to let go." Elise said,
"That fur feels terrific!" She looked a the mother, and said, "Yes!"
Husband guessed, and laughed. I said, "We all feel what each of us
feels. So we DO know that, directly."
Father said, "You can see everything?" I said, "It's not a voluntary
thing. It's all in my mind. But I know what you mean. Great
supervision." He said, "Good!" I said, "None of us have children by
other than full intent." I passed the crystal around, and the kids
accepted the restrictions. I said, "We also use crystals to transfer
knowledge. You can't forget it. We use other methods of teaching, all
very scientific. We teach the whole person, so that also includes the
physical. Our students must be able to survive in all possible
circumstances, so they learn everything from cooking, to martial arts,
psychology to engineering. We take the most capable people in
existence, and make them able to reach their full potential. They kind
of like that." Grins.
I said, "They can come to the school at any time, but not now, so
soon after the incident today. And they should tell their friends
they're going away to a school they really want to go to, so you, the
parents, won't be accused of eating them." Mother said, "A little
strong, but I know what you mean." Boy said, "Did that happen?" I said,
"Some parents got into trouble when they couldn't explain to the
authorities where their children were. We watch for that now, but
something similar almost happened." Elise said, "That was the strangest
thing!" I said to the boy, "You're pleading on the inside, to see it."
He said, "I am!" I said, "Nobody was seriously injured, and there was
no fighting. Just talk. Want me to show you?" They did. I said, "We can
look like anything we want to. That world is very different in the kind
of air it has. None of our schools have that, so I taught two students
there, myself."
I showed the feathertop monastery rescue. They had some wows for it.
Father said, "I understand the whole person training idea better, now.
Thanks. That was impressive in a lot of different ways. More, that you
could actually explain it all, while you were doing it." I grinned, and
said, "Teacher!" More grins. I said, "Our work is to protect people
from us, and people like us. We don't permit interstellar wars. We try
not to interfere in societies, but we help them to evolve, mostly in
secret. Most people won't believe we don't want to rule them. We can't.
We can't lie or kill. That means we really can't be politicians!"
Chuckles.
I said, "We also heal people. Both of you have had some medical
problems, and you need vision correction. Will you allow me to fix all
that?" Man said, "What do we need to do?" I said, "Just agree to it.
And take off your classes you won't be needing." He did that. I glowed
and did a local healing broadcast, and then stopped it. Elise said,
"God didn't embarrass you this time. I said, "You don't have to be so
disappointed about it." Girl said, "God talks to you?" I said, "Yes,
mostly about assignments. It's when I do the healing connections, He
sometimes talks in it to other people. Often about me. In a world
healing broadcast my sister was doing, God actually ordered me to do
some things I was reluctant to do, with past time criminal research.
That was VERY embarrassing!" They laughed at Elise's big grin. I said,
"Just recently, she's become able to have that very situation happen to
her. Tempt Him, He just might do it for fun. Yes He DOES have a sense
of humor." We all felt the contact. I said, "Proof!" Elise said,
"Oops?" She didn't return my big grin.
Girl said, "That was God?" I said, "Yes it was. When you learn all
you can learn, someday you will be able to feel his love directly, when
you do a healing. He might even talk to you. About talking; you know
the school is secret, and so are your special abilities. People will
treat you badly if they knew. You won't want to cause that." Vigorous
nods. We stood, and said said, "Elise will return in a week, to take
the students. Now, something the kids have been wishing for." I opened
my arms to the kids, and they almost fainted in my hug. Then Elise
hugged them. We did the same to the parents, and helped them to sit.
Mother said, "Such love! No doubts at all!" I said, "We hear that a
lot. Elise will be doing all the recruiting on this world, by her wish.
We never order our people. It's all volunteer work. Who we are, is why
we do it." Nods. Elise ported out. I said, "That's what teleporting
looks like. I don't usually do that myself any more. You'll see why, by
how I leave." I melted into a big ball of light, and faded away. They
all stared at where I had been, for a while, with mouths dropped open
in surprise while. Children said together, "I love them!" They grinned
to each other, and hugged.
At the school with George, Elise said, "Good exit. Gets them every
time." I said, "The purpose." She said, "I've done rescues, but that
was my first recruiting. Different." I said, "They're all different.
More difficult than rescues, because of the parents and authorities. On
high tech worlds we can come out to a leader, but not in pre FTL
societies. It really isn't like on Earth, where they know about us."
George said, "When do we do world healing broadcasts on the red
planets?" I said, "When it won't disrupt their society too much. Too
many different opposing religions, such as here, will cause a big
problem that can't be resolved without us being in the open, and that
will change them. Here, we didn't have a choice. Got ordered. Trust Him
to know when, for other worlds." Nods.
Elise said, "A lot of Super Psis there are kids just the right age to
come to school. Not a coincidence." I said, "I try to avoid those in
what I create." George said, "Did you do that on your own?" I said, "I
requested it to be done. We discussed it, and I was pointed at it. I
did all the calculations and work. It was obviously an advancement
test." Nods. George said, "Your request was part of the test, too.
Assuming responsibility at the right time." I said, "Don't rub it in.
Or that." Chuckles.
