Having seen this evening our dear Gallery spammed by a purveyor of
shotaporn, I realised I knew very little about what differentiated
"manga" from "anime" from "shota" from "hentai." So I did some
scholarly research in that most scholarly and dependable, highly
exalted and unimpeachable on-line source, Wikipedia, and digested a
few facts, which I now present here for your edification. And if your
name happens to be Edith, then for your edithfication.
ANIME
Anime is short for animation.
MANGA
Manga is the Japanese word for comics and print cartoons. Manga
encompasses a large number of subjects and styles and is read widely
by adults and children. It is usually produced in black and white as
a serial.
SHOTA
Shota or Shotacon are Manga works specifically depicting children in
sexual situations, particularly boys. They may be involved with
adults of either sex, or with one another. The theme of yaoi, or
homosexual relationships, is common in Shotacon. The female version
of Shotacon is known, somewhat predictably, as Lolicon.
HENTAI
Hentai translates from Japanese as metamorphosis or abnormality, but
strongly implies sexual perversion. Hentai manga explicitly depicts
situations deemed socially or morally unacceptable, or simply
impossible fantasy. It is a very old art form, not surprisingly.
I have found some promising work in Shota and Hentai, but by-in-large
I do not particularly enjoy them, insomuch as they often depict
sado-masochistic themes in which young boys [or girls, in the case of
Lolicon] are victims.
And, yes, I am quite bored!
