For many American Indian youth, the passage from childhood to
adulthood took the form of isolation, meditation and fasting. The boy
was sent into the wilderness to fast and meditate until he had a
vision dream. Sometimes his spirit helper appeared in the vision
dream. What follows is such a story as told to Peter Gabriel by an
Apache man.
