Dear Bookworm,
Unless I am very much mistaken, the news service you are presently
using, Google, will not represent binaries in a non-binary
newsgroup--only discussion. Hence, although you may see a binary
attachment indicated, you will not be able to see it. You can see
binaries if you subscribe to a an online news service, such as
Easynews, that has the option of accessing videos, music and pictures
in the groups through their website, http format. Easynews is very
good for that, although you may not find all the groups you wish to
view on their website.
If you prefer to receive information nttp, through a news reader
program instead of going to the Easynews website, you must obtain (and
almost always purchase!) a news reader program to complement your news
service program. There are several. I use Forte Agent, which is
quite satisfactory. It will automatically decode Yenc-encoded
binaries (this encoding became ubiquitous some years back to reduce
binary file sizes) into jpeg, mpeg, flv, etc.
I hope this provides you with some useful information. It was all
very confusing to me at first, but I got through ... so I am sure you
will as well.
Sincerely,
HMS Victor Victorian
