I think the most compelling part of the story, the cute naked boys
aside [which is NOT possible, of course] was the conflicted character
portrayed by Aiden Quinn, Mr. Quarrier, who professed a love for the
Indian but, in the end, lost all that he had to the jungle--his son,
his wife Kathy Bates, his mission, his beliefs and at last his life.
The most tragic figure, of course, was our Cheyenne bush pilot played
by Tom Berenger, who "became" an Niaruna Indian, rejecting the modern
trapping of white civilization to identify with his "native people",
only to bring destruction down in the form of the influenza,
contracted after having sex with the missionary director's wife,
played by Daryl Hannah [who naked perched on a pool side rock looked
very much to me like a fish belly].
Big name stars in this one. Tom Berenger, John LIthgow, Daryl Hannah,
Aidan Quinn, Tom Waits and the wonderful Kathy Bates, 1991 released,
run time 3 hours and six minutes. Based on the novel by Peter
Matthiessen.
