I'm really hoping TheDevilsBush will return and tell us a bit more.
I always assumed those boys were either street kids or from an
institution, possibly in Moscow.
I once spoke with a social worker from Moscow. The situation back then for
Moscow street kids in post-Soviet Russia was not good. Many were not
street kids at all in the sense that we use that term ie homeless. A lot
had families of some sort but the parents were fucked up - alcohol,
unemployment etc. So a lot of kids spent as much time away from their
families as possible, while still returning home. Glue sniffing was rife.
If they hung around the streets long emough they would eventually get
picked up by authorities and get put into an institution. Or assimilated
by crime gangs when they got old enough.
