The photographer of the Oliver films was Gerd Berendt, and they were
released by Pojkart. Now, Gerd Berendt is a typical German name
(whether it's his true name or not, I do not know), and Pojkart is based
That should explain the German titles.
Both Germany and France used to have large naturist groups, and many
Germans vacation in France or Croatia in Summer.
It is a reasonable surmise that Mr Berendt met Oliver and his family in
one of those resorts, and got their permission to film.
You will note that many of the posted pictures of Cherry Boy have been
scanned from the French naturist magazine Jeune et Natural.
I know nothing about Cherry Boy or his origins, but I know that a small
boy of foreign descent can easily pick up the local dialect of his new
country and learn to master it fluently.
This is much, much more difficult for adults, and if your French
correspondent can find a segment with Oliver talking with his parents,
the Portugese angle may be verified or discounted.
Often children will prefer to use the adoptive language among
themselves, as they do with their friends and in school, which is why
they would speak French in the movie, irrespective of their origin.
Just my one penny (=two US cents) of logic.
As for the nickname "Cherry Boy", you forgot to post the Cherry Boy
picture... :p
