Charles,
I think it's clear that this person recognizes in you qualities
that he wishes he had, and does not. He can't touch your
honesty, your integrity, your compassion and your intelligence,
so he tries to bring you down to his level. Then, when you are
sputtering and swearing at the depths to which this person will
descend, he can take comfort in thinking you no better than him.
How you deal with this person is your decision. I would only
respectfully suggest you consider whether playing your assigned
role in this person's little puppet show is worth your time and
the aggravation he's causing you.
