I don't particularly want to have this argument, as I have no real
interest in this area. However, I will make a few points.
I haven't spent any time in soc.support.fat-acceptance. I don't
particularly care to, although I perhaps could spare to lose a few points.
I am not what you'd call particularly athletic, although I don't think my
weight gets into an area in which you'd call me unhealthy just for it. If
the persons on that group are misrepresenting scientific data, or making
up excuses for their actions, then they should be educated if at all
possible so they can make informed decisions. That said, the tone that I
saw from you in your original message to this group was not helpful or
instructive, but simply insulting. If they're taking science and using it
for political ends, then the best advice I have for you is to quote proper
science. At least, that's how we do it on talk.origins.
I am happy that you are not deliberately trolling against those of greater
weight than yourself. In this message more than the other you clearly seem
to have an understanding of what you're doing and, while I have not
verified the truth of your claims about the regular posters on the other
group, if you are correct then I owe you an apology. If those on that
group misrepresent science, or if they are intentionally keeping people
from losing weight for health reasons, then they do themselves and others
listening to them a disservice.
Still, the general idea of accepting who you are when it is not within
your power to change it is a positive one. The truth is that people do
have very different ideas about what sexuality is in people, and saying
that all people must be slim in order to be sexually attractive (as our
own regular Uncle Davey was saying) is quite wrong. There is clearly a
genetic aspect to one's weight, and while sufficient willpower can
overcome it, expecting all people to look like a bodybuilder or athelte
for your own ego gratification (if that is what you're doing, which I am
not sure of at all) is equally wrong.
I am overweight. I lack any great desire to lose the weight for its own
sake; I do try to get enough exercise to be healthy and vigorous
nonetheless, although I won't be running any marathons anytime soon. I
accept the risks of my weight as I feel an adult should; if people are
lying about scientific data for personal or political gain, they should be
refuted if possible.
I'll stop here. If I neglected to respond to anything you feel I need to,
let me know and I'll respond to them.
