That is completely false. It was proposed because of patterns
found in fossil lineages, which can only really be seen once you
have a lot of fossils. The best empirical demonstrations of
punctuationalism involve finding a whole heap of fossils, and
tracing their form over time. You don't see punctuation until
you have a LOT of fossils.
