This fails to answer the question: how many fossils are to be
expected, and by how much does the number of existing fossils fall
short?

Your answer presumes that the number of existing fossils is less than
the number expected.  In order to use this as the starting point of
*anything* it's first necessary to show that it is in fact the case.
