Well, there are reasons for it:
1. Many peoples are using newsgrabber for accessing usenet (like
newsbin), not classic newsreaders (like agent). This indicates, that
they are only interested in leeching, not in contributing. There is a
remarkable silence in _ALL_ binary groups. And Indexing-services like
binsearch have amplified this trend.
2. Changes in legislation, which make contributing more risky.
Dude-with-the-hair stated it on april-25-2008 in this very group:
Hey Fellas,
I can assure you there are lurkers here. That's how I found you here,
some of them told me. Your posts are very much appreciated by those
too scared to thank you publicly. I'll thank you for them! Many
thanks!

3. Bandwith-difference is increasing. Some people have only a
modem-connecting, others a 50 MegaBit-line. And the broadbanders don't
care for the modem-users. Just look at the webcams posted by teenlove
or sourdough: 50 MegaBytes in _ONE_ part, without pars. So, in return,
the guys with small bandwith will not contribute.
4. Usenet in general is a fine source for those who want to leech
only. That's the advertisement of usenet-service-providers, and that's
how people behave. You should not be so naive to conclude from your
behaviour to the behaviour of others. Just look at brevol's post:
'I enjoy your posts, please continue.
Do you have RBV04 by chance?
Thanks!'
And what was the comment made by kory in another group after serving
his request for certain pictures?
'thx'
You can't even wipe your ass with a 'thx', it's totally worthless.
On the other side, requests by contributors like yourself are ignored.
And I see this strange thing happen all the times in all groups:
requesters are served like kings, contributors are ignored.
That was, for me, a major reason to stop posting.
Glen, don't assume that I'm the Asshole-of-the-Universe. In fact, I
feel with you. Years ago my thoughts were: I should reward this
poster. But now I don't see the reason to serve thousands, when only
so few are contributing. And don't betray yourself: most of the
lurkers have something to share, they just don't do it (Brevol's
request, for example, was very distinct. How does he know, what to
request?).
I'm convinced, that many ex-posters are thinking like me; at least,
the number of active posters is decreased continuously in the last
years.
Your posts are still propagated to other servers: astraweb shows them,
the old easynews has them and newscene seems to have them too.
Giganews usually drops messages with attachments in non-binary groups
(but instead, it keeps text-messages for years). Propagation is not
the reason for the low number of comments/contributions. Even a
well-known group like abmtm, which is carried by all servers, has only
a poor number of contributors.
