They were filmed in 8mm and Super8 film. The home movie projectors were
somewhat rough with the film, and caused significant damage over time.
Then they were transferred to VHS tape with the primitive equipment of
the time. The digital encodings were done from the tapes with less than
ideal equipment, and when the codecs weren't as good as they are today.

More cameras wouldn't be all that useful without more competent
videographers. Less editing with just one camera. Their biggest problem
was in keeping the kids from blocking the camera's view of their
actions. Sometimes they would just let the camera run, and leave the
room to the kids, who then did whatever they wanted.
Those were BIG cameras. I don't think they ran around too much with
them.
