SNT 1990-05-05 The Little Father (Royce Ryton).txt
Royce Ryton - The Little Father
BBC Radio 4: Saturday Night Theatre
Broadcast: Saturday 5th May 1990 @ 7:45 p.m.
In domestic affairs, Tsar Alexander II's reforms, while outraging many reactionaries, were regarded as far too moderate by the
liberals and radicals. Radical activities increased sharply among the intelligentsia, resulting in a reassertion of repressive
policies. When the populist, or "to the people," movement arose in the late 1860s, the government arrested and prosecuted
hundreds of students. Many radicals responded with terrorist tactics.
By 1872 the 'little father', as Tsar Alexander II was known, of the Russian people finds himself as hated by his own family, who don't
understand his views, as he is by his subjects.
With Paul Daneman [Tsar Alexander II], Dorothy Tutin [The Empress], Tara Dominick [Marie], Simon Treves [Sergey], Stephen
Garlick [Alexey], Michael Kilgarriff [Colonel Ryleev], Vincent Brimble [Alfie], Jo Kendall [Countess Tolstoy], Oona Beeson [Ella],
and Marcia King [Catherine].
Directed by Matthew Walters
