I don't use Astraweb so I can't do any research along those lines.
If you suspect Newsrover, why not try another news reader?
Pan is free, and I have succedssfully used it for binary groups in the
past. Even if you don't want it as a longer term solution, it would
at least show whether you can get bodies for the headers you can see,
which might help narrow down where your current problem lies.
