DESCRIPTION
==================
Samsara is the companion piece to the amazing documentary, Baraka which followed humanity through our existence. Samsara is in the similar realm of putting a lens on humanity within different parts of the planet. Samsara is the epitome of image and sound working together. This is pure imagery meant to be looked at and to take in. The music is meant to bring the image to life and send a rush of emotions through your body, and that is exactly what it does. Michael Stearns provided original music for Baraka, which also used source music to fill out the rest of the soundtrack. A song from Dead Can Dance (with member Lisa Gerrard) was also used and explains why she was brought on here to do original music. Michael Stearns worked alone on his tracks while Lisa Gerrard & Marcello De Francisci worked together for their tracks. The culmination can only be described as a transcendental experience that must be had.
The music is filled with rich beauty and ethnic accents that transport us around the globe. It washes over you like a quilt of vivid colors and fills every part of your soul with a human touch. The music really saturates your mind and the experience becomes meditational. The flow is absolutely stunning, and since this time around we have all original music the score's structure is perfectly executed. While there is a distinct flow, the music also is pastiche in nature. It feels like a stirring pot of cultures. In one moment we're in Dubai and the next we're immersed in Tuvan throat singing. It's such a stunning experience that feels like it's enriching you with every moment. Music is a product of human expression and I can't think of a score that better represents that than this. The culture and history felt through the music here is amazing. Every moment is filled with life even when the score becomes somber, even dreary. Towards the end of the album the score takes on a new life with certain moments of pure beauty. The track "Organics" is one that is just a mesmerizing experience. When the score was finished I truly felt as if I had went on a journey and traveled back. This isn't a traditional score with a narrative, but it holds all the most amazing qualities any great score should have. A truly exceptional listen.
When you reflect on Samsara you may be tempted to hit repeat and start the disc over. It's a reflection of our own human expressions in life as told by music, which happens to be the ultimate form of human expression. The three amazing composers here are able to accomplish a rare feat that is hard to experience anywhere else. This is a much more well-rounded experience than Baraka, and it shines through the emotional depth of the score. Beauty and mystery infuse together to make Samsara a sonic brushstroke that will definitely awaken something within you. - Kaya Savas
