Markus Reuter is a composer and producer who fuses multiple genres into his own blend of experimental and classical music. Having originally began as a piano player, the Austrian based musician switched to guitar and subsequently experimented with variations of the six stringed instrument which are well suited to two handed tapping techniques, such as the Chapman Stick and the Warr Guitar, before embarking upon a project to construct his own variant as a co-designer of the Touch Guitar with Texan luthier Ed Reynolds. With a large back catalogue as both a solo artist and member of Centrozoon, Reuter now returns with Todmorden 513, an accomplished and accessible contemporary classical album which is marked by lush arrangements and immaculate recording.
Todmorden 513 is an album which can be described as modern classical but is quite different in nature from many of the contemporary artists who work within the same broad genre. More Machinefabriek than Max Richter, Reuter is not easily equated with another artist and is firmly in possession of his own sound. The album is made up of eight tracks and opens with an almost eight minute long piece of music presumably assembled with touch guitar and synthesisers, with either organic or sampled strings backing. The track sounds very clean without being overly clinical, probably in part due to its highly technical design and execution. The '513' part of the title is referring to a sequence of five hundred and thirteen harmonies and triads which are assembled in a quite involved manner that does not bear repeating in full here but is detailed on Reuter's own BandCamp page and makes for an interesting read.
The album continues in a similar fashion to the opening track and operates from a roughly similar template while offering variating arrangements and occasional use of other instruments with much success, Reuter structuring each piece of music in such a way as to keep the listener's attention focused. Todmorden 513 is very cinematic and there is an undercurrent which seems to hint at a more sinister intention, subtle at first but then the artist racks up the tension to an almost unbearable level as the album moves to the mid and then latter stages. Reuter does an excellent job at knowing when to let this tension ebb away for a moment before ratcheting it up once again with perfect timing, it's a near masterclass of dynamics and proves Reuter's worth as a gifted musician and composer. - Review by Adam Williams for Futuresequence.
