=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : crystalline piano for the winter atmosphere
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 14-Jan-2011
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Even if you don't have snow and ice in your part of the country (we don't, but I'm guessing that most of you do this year...), the sound of the grand piano ringing across the chilled atmospheres of the heart of winter is one of the natural sounds of the season.
Today, 25 years after the glory days of the solo piano genre sparked by artists like KEITH JARRETT and GEORGE WINSTON, mastering the solo piano, or the piano plus simple duets and trios, remains an elusive goal: very easy to do, very hard to do well.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space....we combine the bell-like clarity of the piano with the simple lyricism of fine music, on a program called KEYS OF GLASS 3.

INTRO : The most famous achievements of English musical genius BRIAN ENO are a string of groundbreaking solo albums and collaborations going back to the 1970s, his role as producer of U2 and other major rock bands, and popularizing the term "ambient" as applied to music. Thank you, Brian, for all that.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 11-Feb-2011
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The heavenly spectacle is never more brilliant than during the cold winter months. On those glorious, crystal clear nights, the chilled fog, freezing rain and snow is forgotten, and we look out to the stars and look back into time itself. It's a vision that can truly be said to have a timeless fascination: if not for its beauty, then for its mystery.
They could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, acoustic and electronic music inspired by the night sky and the quiet melancholy of the winter atmosphere, on a program called STARRY NIGHT.

PGM 938 : "WAITING"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : ambient electronics for exploration and discovery
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 18-Feb-2011
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : If ever there was a part of everyday life that almost everyone hates, it's waiting.
It's a shame because waiting is unavoidable, like death and taxes, and just about as popular.
Waiting in line...is barely tolerated. God help the person who tries to cut in.
Waiting while driving is even worse, breeding dangerous, irrational behavior. We have a name for that: road rage.
Waiting causes impatience, anger, and stress. We have drugs for that.
We have special rooms for waiting. They're rarely happy places.
In short, waiting is almost always considered a waste of time. A bad thing.
But it doesn't have to be that way. If you have a smart phone, you've already discovered the joys of "continuous episodic computing." It makes waiting productive. Just please, not while you're driving.
With a change in attitude, waiting becomes an opportunity for exploration, a time for discovery; a time to read, play, watch or listen, connect with friends, write. Or, simply a quiet space to catch up with yourself. A good thing.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an hour of ambient electronics for exploration and discovery, on a program called (wait for it)........WAITING.

PGM NOTE : music to endure a lingering winter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 4-Mar-2011
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
In the waning days of winter, time seems to stretch, while the spirit yearns for release.
In his epic poem The Waste Land, T.S. ELIOT wrote:
April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
After endless storms and tempests, every extra day delays the arrival of sun and freedom, and adds more weight to the soul. It's the season of depression, impatience, rebellion; fueled by memory and desire, made more urgent...by signs of change.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, music to carry us through the down days of winter, on a program called ENDLESS.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : lonesome and heartfelt: the Celtic song
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 11-Mar-2011
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
But imagine living there 400 years ago in the time of itinerant musicians like the blind Irish harper and poet TURLOUGH O'CAROLAN. These travelers criss-crossed the land, casting spells on their listeners with the beauty of their music, the simplest of instruments and the purest of human voices. With the wire-strung harp, the whistle and the drum, they spun out spirited jigs and reels, delicate faerie dances, ethereal chants, and deep, plangent ballads that define the term 'heartfelt.'
On this transmission of Hearts of Space....we celebrate the land and the artists who keep this musical tradition alive and vibrant today, on a program called THE CELTIC BALLAD.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 15-Apr-2011
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : A dramatic reminder of the fragility of our human infrastructure shook, rattled and rolled over Japan last month.
First, one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded, followed by a classic tsunami that inundated the northern coast of Japan and obliterated everything in its path. And as if one of the largest natural disasters in history wasn't enough, the tsunami overwhelmed the defenses of a coastal nuclear power plant, and set off the second worst nuclear disaster in history.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space...we focus on Japan in its time of trials. We feature the unique Japanese sensibility for space, rhythm and harmony.

PGM NOTE : sacred choral and instrumental blessings for Easter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 22-Apr-2011
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Each year, the return of spring brings with it the celebration of the Easter holiday in Christian communities around the world. And with that we return to a series of programs of sacred music that go back to the earliest days of Hearts of Space. It's not all music designed specifically for the Easter service, but all of it resonates quietly with the spirit of this season.
As with most of these programs, once again we've turned to our longtime guest producer for classical and sacred music, ELLEN HOLMES. Like a musical archeologist, Ellen specializes in digging out the gems of this great repertoire.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, sacred choral and instrumental blessings, on a program called BEATITUDES.
It includes works from the Russian and Eastern Orthodox sacred service; a medieval Ladymass and a faux-bourdon from the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris; by Renaissance composers MANUEL CARDOSO, ESTEVAO LOPES MORAGO, TOMAS LUIS DE VICTORIA and ANTHONY HOLBORNE; from the Baroque period by JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH; and from the modern era, music for organ by LOUIS VIERNE, for chorus by JOHN TAVENER, and for brass ensemble by OLIVIER MESSIAEN and ERIC WHITACRE.
Sacred choral and instrumental blessings for Easter: BEATITUDES...on this transmission ...of Hearts of Space.

INTRO : The phenomenon of time is an enduring mystery. Our greatest philosophers and physicists speculate about it. Some say time is as linear as the atomic clock; others say time is a subjective illusion, an artifact of the spinning of our bio-systems.
One of the best and certainly least dangerous ways of getting closer to the timeless is ambient music. With its long cycles, repetition, and slow-breathing modulations, it invites us into timeless space, destination free.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space....another hour of timeless, deep-drifting ambient atmospheres, on a program called TIMESCAPES.

INTRO : In the brief, happy interlude between the tempests of spring and the hurricanes of late summer, we pass through an ideal moment in the cycle of the seasons. It comes in gentle word-pairs: Clear and Sunny, Warm and Breezy, Fair and Mild, Blue skies and White clouds. Even the pollen seems to abate for a bit, and we're granted a period of naturally fuelled optimism in our storm-tossed world.
It's a time for classic electronic music for flying and floating in translucent blue atmospheres. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an hour of spacemusic for early summer...on a program called BLUE SKY BLUE.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : the psychotronic music of MICHEL HUYGEN
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 8-Jul-2011
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The Belgian-born, Barcelona-based artist MICHEL HUYGEN has been pursuing his brand of electronic music since 1976. Born of a more innocent, optimistic era of space exploration, new discoveries in music and a dawning cosmic consciousness fueled by science, exotic religions and ethnobotany, he called his music "psycho-tronic."
Starting as a three piece band called NEURONIUM in 1977, they enjoyed great success with the first album of cosmic music ever recorded in Spain. After signing with a major label, they collaborated with singer NICO and played big concerts in bullrings and stadiums.
By 1980 NEURONIUM is a keyboard duo, collaborating with Spanish guitarist SANTI PICO. The next year, VANGELIS invites them to London to appear together on the television show "Musical Express." But even small bands are hard to keep together, and by 1982 and its fifth album CHROMIUM ECHOES, NEURONIUM has become the solo project of Michel Huygen.
The years that follow are a blur of albums, labels, collaborations, concerts in museums, planetariums and electronic music festivals in Europe, and in 1987, a ten-year retrospective album called ALMA: Spanish for "soul."
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a Michel Huygen retrospective called NEURONIUM. We'll be compiling from across his 35-year long career from the albums IN LONDON, SYNAPSIA, MYSTYKATEA, ETYKAGNOSTYKA, ASTRALIA, NIHILOPHOBIA, ONIRIA, HYDRO, and IRAWADI.

PGM NOTE : ambient meets gamelan: a journey in the Indonesian soundscape
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 15-Jul-2011
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : According to the mythology of the Javanese people, the metallophonic music of Indonesia was created by the native bronze age culture almost two thousand years ago. The legendary god-king who ruled Java needed a way to summon the other gods, so he invented the gong. Later, he added other gongs, and thus began the gamelan orchestra. Today the gamelan includes dozens of unique gongs, metallophones, and xylophones, plus drums, bamboo flutes, spike fiddles, and other instruments.
The earliest image of the gamelan comes from stone carvings on the great 8th-century Buddhist temple of BOROBUDUR in central Indonesia. The current form evolved in the royal courts of Java in the 12th century.
These vibrant percussion ensembles have long attracted and influenced Western admirers, including composers Claude Debussy, Erik Satie, John Cage, Lou Harrison, Steve Reich, Philip Glass and others, as well as pop artists like Mike Oldfield, King Crimson, The Residents, and Mouse on Mars.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the gamelan and its ambient progeny, on a program called BOROBUDUR.

INTRO : Slow-floating trumpet lines recalling the classic sound of jazz giant MILES DAVIS...this week on Hearts of Space, we return to our long-running "spacejazz" series. It began in 1983 and our first year of national broadcasting. The last installment with the "spacejazz" title was in 1991, and though we've done spacejazz shows with other names as recently as 2007, I have to admit we've been remiss in keeping up with the ambient side of jazz...so we have lots of fine material to bring you.
In jazz, the taste for space is not universal. Some artists have it naturally, while most focus on other aspects of their music. Virtuosity can actually get in the way: to play slowly, you have to feel it. In the case of one of our core sources, the great German ECM label, producer MANFRED EICHER seems to extract it magically from the musicians he works with.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we focus on the lyrical soundworlds of contemplative jazz, on a program called SPACEJAZZ 7: YEARNING.

PGM NOTE : an innerspace desert journey
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 19-Aug-2011=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Slowly...quietly...dawn overtakes the darkness of the southwestern desert. For those who inhabit its rugged expanses, it's the beginning of a new day and a new cycle of sun, heat, wind and dust: the daily challenges of existence in one of earth's most extreme environments.
No one has written more eloquently about the desert than naturalist EDWARD ABBEY. In his classic book DESERT SOLITAIRE, he describes the desert as both a physical environment and a state of mind nurtured by isolation. For Arizona musician STEVE ROACH, the desert is a place of "beauty, stark vastness, magnificent vistas and silence," a space that "provides a more direct path to the deeper self and the source of one's artistic impulses."
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we explore that isolation and introspection, on a journey called DESERT SOLITAIRE.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

SECOND BROADCAST: 11-Sep-2011

INTRO : This week we mark the 10th anniversary of the historic attacks on the U.S. on September 11, 2001. Memory of traumatic events changes over time; while others will be recounting the facts and events of that day...we will recall some of the feelings it provoked by repeating a special program from the following week. Even after 10 years, the wound remains tender, the fear it created remains present, and the hope for a better world remains a vision and a prayer.
It was an epoch-defining event that temporarily rendered everything else insignificant. Even our ordinary diet of violent media had not prepared us to comprehend the implacable hatred and disregard for life/ of this phantom enemy. Perhaps no single act in American history has raised more questions, more emotions, more tears.
If spring is the season of hope, then it is fitting that in the spring of 1999, in advance of the Millenium, Sony Classical released a choral symphony by New York composer JONATHAN ELIAS, titled THE PRAYER CYCLE. As we did in 1999, this week we devote the entirety of Hearts of Space to this extraordinary music. But this week, it will sound different, feel different, and will have a different meaning.
JONATHAN ELIAS began writing THE PRAYER CYCLE in the period immediately before the birth of his first child. "I was excited by the possibilities for my child," he says, "but I also felt anxiety and sadness about the world she was about to enter. With all the wondrous advances of mankind, it was painful to acknowledge the other defining characteristic of the 20th century, which is more calculated and cold-blooded than any other period of recorded history. Is man's inhumanity to man as common in our nature as other forms of survival? With these thoughts and concerns, I began to write 'The Prayer Cycle.'"
The effect of this brilliant multi-cultural, multi-language production is extraordinarily powerful and appropriate. "Prayer," says composer Elias, "is what we turn to when the only thing we have left...is hope."

INTRO: In the waning days of summer, the crickets sing us to

into Indian summer and autumn, it's a good time to revisit
the ambient piano -- in the right hands, it's a source of
personal expression and deep listening satisfaction. Whether
on extended solo flights or a supporting role, the piano is
at once physically solid and musically unlimited, yet can be
weightless and immaterial.

world of the ambient piano, on a program called PIANOSPHERES 2.

INTRO: A classic piece of electronic spacemusic from France
by JEAN-MICHEL JARRE. With just a few notes, it creates a world
of mystery and imagination. Slow, deep, romantic and sublime,
it invites us into a place that's unknown and unpredictable,

It's true that _all_ good music takes you away, but since the
1970s artists have been using electronic tools to craft a sound
that takes you to places far beyond the reach of ordinary music.
Dark ambient electronics have become a vehicle...for transport

INTRO: In the golden days that follow the autumn equinox, the
natural world enters a period of recession. The heat of summer
often lingers while the light declines; the evening crickets
sing their hearts out in a final quest for immortality, and
the withering leaves crackle underfoot as the trees begin
their seasonal transformation.
It's a time that calls for a special music: contemplative,
melancholy, austere, beyond ambition. A music of pure tones
and slow melodies: elegant, unassuming, suffused with quiet
beauty. The classic combination of the piano and the cello
sounds the season perfectly, with clear, bell-like notes
ringing over a rich, dark foundation. For this sound, we
return every autumn to the immaculate recordings of the
German ECM label.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, sublime chamber music
for the autumn transition...on a program called AFTERGLOW.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO: You're listening to the first wholly electronic music
instrument: the _theremin_, invented in 1920 by a 21-year old
Russian physics student named LEV TERMEN. It emerged out of
Russian government research into proximity sensors. Today, every
smartphone has them, but back then it was cutting-edge technology.
No less a historical figure than VLADIMIR LENIN was so impressed
by the theremin that he took lessons to play it, and sent young
Theremin around the world to demonstrate it as an example of
Russian scientific achievement.
Lev Terman arrived in New York in 1927 and became LEON THEREMIN.
The original name for his instrument was the _aetherphone_ or
etherophone, later the Theremin and Thereminvox. It was the first
musical instrument played entirely without touching: metal wands
for pitch and volume are controlled by the position and movement
of the hands and body in air, which makes it very difficult
to play.
The first real virtuoso of the theremin was a former Russian
violinist named CLARA ROCKMORE, who developed a technique called
_aerial fingering_. With this, she could play Romantic classics
like this Rachmaninoff Vocalise, as well as the eerie sci-fi
soundtracks for which the instrument became known. The late
ROBERT MOOG of Moog synthesizer fame built theremins and sold
theremin kits, and today the instrument remains a kind of cult
classic among electronic musicians.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the theremin and some
of its ethereal electronic descendants, on a program called
ETHEROPHONIC.

INTRO: After the brilliant light and intensive energy of summer,
the natural world cools and contracts. In the dimming days of
autumn, we begin our descent into the dark months, and the music
of the season becomes more somber. As the leaves wither and fall,
we pass through a period marked by the letter "d": deflation,
decomposition, decay. In music, it's the sound of desaturated
timbres, darkening harmonies and descending progressions.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space...we reflect the sound
of the season on a program called DECOMPRESSION.

INTRO: It's high time we devoted an entire show to the music
of San Francisco's elegant dark diva JILL TRACY -- and there's
no better time to do that than Halloween. We consider her a
Bay area treasure...like Grafeo coffee, Scharffen Berger
chocolates, and fine Napa Cabernets.
As a lyricist and songwriter, Jill Tracy plies the literary
currents popularized by Edgar Allen Poe, Bram Stoker, Edward Gorey
and other 19th and 20th century storytellers of the netherworld:
spinners of tales of the mysterious, the strange, and the macabre.
Her sound begins with an unadorned dark cabaret trio of contrabass,
drums and parlor piano; it expands on recordings into the
Malcontent Orchestra: violin, viola, cello, and low woodwinds,
plus guitar, Chapman stick, electric bass, harmonium and the
odd sarod. She calls it "post-Classical Noir" and glams, goths
and Dark Romantics of all ages love her with a crimson passion.
Building on an image-rich film noir foundation, she embroiders
darkly seductive rhythms and a chilled layer of sly sophistication,
delivered in a beguiling femme fatale vocal style that keeps you
hanging onto every sinister turn of phrase.
Over the last 12 years, she's created three superb albums of
original songs, instrumental soundtracks for 'Nosfertatu' and
other short films, and a powerful instrumental version of her
2008 masterpiece, 'The Bittersweet Constrain.'
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a potion brewed from
dark Jill Tracy magick, including songs and instrumentals from
'Diabolical Streak' and 'The Bittersweet Constrain,' music from
the soundtrack to 'Nervous96,' and "Under the Fate of the Blue
Moon" -- "a waltz to make wishes come true."
"HAUNTED" -- a JILL TRACY conjuration for Halloween...on this
transmission...of Hearts of Space.

INTRO: As we descend into autumn, cooling temperatures condense
water vapor in the atmosphere into mist and fog. At dawn on fall
mornings, we find a new world, magically air-brushed by sun and
water. At night, it's a kaleidoscope of surreal colors and
luminescent curtains surrounding cars, signs and streetlights.
Mist is ethereal and mysterious. It blurs and conceals, softening
form and blending colors into hazy gradients, shrinking the world
around us to a gauzy blanket, bending light with a palette of
optical special effects: rings and halos, diffusion, refraction
and reflection.
In ambient music, the equivalents of fog and mist are deep drones,
shadowy harmonies, and dense clusters of subtle sound. It's music
for drifting slowly...in a field of dreams.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey in the autumn
atmospheres...on a program called MISTS OF TIME.

INTRO : We live in a complex and ever-changing world. When things go wrong, it's all too easy to fall back on cynicism, worry, even despair. In difficult times, we tend to forget that despite our problems and injustices, our world is still supporting more people, at a higher standard of living, than at any time in human history.
That's why the Thanksgiving holiday is a welcome respite. From its origins as an after-harvest celebration, it evolved into something more: an opportunity to convene family and friends; share comfort food and conversation; and at the heart of the holiday, the simple act of pausing, looking back, and expressing gratitude for what life has brought us this year.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, music for acceptance and gratitude, on a program called GIVING THANKS.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 9-Dec-2011
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : When WENDY CARLOS wanted to introduce the Moog synthesizer to popular music in 1969, she chose the music of JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH for the first album of electronic classical transcriptions. "SWITCHED-ON BACH" was a sensation that won three Grammy awards: a landmark in electronic music. You're hearing Carlos' version of the Adagio from BACH's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 1."
Why Bach? It turned out the music of the 17th and 18th centuries was ideally suited to the limited capabilities of early monophonic synthesizers, and Bach was the king of the Baroque. Even so, it took weeks of painstaking work to record each piece. Carlos proved that synthesizers could produce never-before-heard sounds that could still be fully musical and expressive. In doing so, she set the stage for all the electronic composers that have followed.
It was a music of courts, drawing rooms and social occasions, played in palaces and opulently decorated churches. The tone ranged from light and buoyant to busy and mechanical; from formal and polite to intensely emotional in the slow Adagios, Arias, Largos, and Sarabandes.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we explore the sublime depths of the Baroque adagio, with music by J. S. BACH, VIVALDI, BOCCHERINI, and ALBINONI... on a program called BACH AND BAROQUE.

INTRO : As we pass the winter solstice and begin the end of the year holidays, the sounds of the season take on a celebratory and spiritual air. In the far northern country of Norway, it's always a white Christmas, and the music strikes a balance between the somber isolation of the long Arctic nights, and the cheerful lights and rituals of the holiday season.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a Nordic holiday journey from our longtime guest producer ELLEN HOLMES of ADAGIO RECORDINGS, on a program called STARLIGHT NORTH.

INTRO : Consider, dear listeners, the unresolved interval between Christmas and the New Year. Some of us work, some don't. Some socialize with friends and family, some enjoy a good book. A fortunate minority take vacations in warm places; the rest of us return unwanted gifts, make resolutions for the new year, clean out closets, take in a movie, and keep busy to disguise the lack of normal purpose.
In general, it's an ill-defined and unsettled week in our national calendar until New Year's eve parties and a massive day of football bring some all-American clarity back to the picture. In the week to come, we start the new year and whatever the 'new normal' is.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space...we wish you a stellar new year...and bring you a soundtrack for this phantom period, on a program called INTERLUDE.
