PGM 861 : "NIGHT LIGHT"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a Nordic winter's journey
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 2-Jan-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The austere folk music of Norway and the Scandinavian countries
has a paradox at its heart: in a land of frigid Arctic winters and stark,
glacial landscapes, the music overflows with warmth and beauty.
While the winter days are dark, the nights are illuminated with the
intoxicating spectacle of the northern lights. On this transmission of
Hearts of Space, a Nordic winter's journey called NIGHT LIGHT.

PGM NOTE : a journey to the quiet heart of winter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 9-Jan-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : In the brief days after the winter solstice, we pass the apogee of the
yearly cycle of earth and sun, and plunge into the season of cold and dark.
For our friends in Alaska and the Arctic north, the days become mere formalities.
The distant sun struggles to reach the horizon, appears briefly, then retreats
into darkness. Water hangs suspended in the blue-gray atmosphere, and
we enter a world of deep, silent spaces, muted by fog and snow.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey to the quiet heart of winter
called ABSOLUTE ZERO.

PGM 863 : "CONSONANCE"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : Medieval, Baroque and Now
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 23-Jan-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The formal, pious, monarchical cultures that produced
what we call Medieval and Baroque music seem worlds removed
from the chaotic multicultural intensity of our era. Yet, whether
coming from cathedral or castle, dedicated to the glory of God
or the entertainment of man, whether modal or harmonic,
European music from the Middle Ages to the 18th century
still speaks eloquently, and carries a message of faith, civility
and grace across the ages.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we revisit some of the masters
on an Early Music, Baroque and contemporary journey called...CONSONANCE.

PGM 864 : "WINTRY BRONZE"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : crystalline sounds for bells, gongs and resonant percussion
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 30-Jan-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : In the chilled, crystalline air of winter, the sound of bells, gongs
and resonant percussion instruments takes on an uncanny appeal.
Purity, clarity, and simplicity are the goals; we yearn for the essence of things.
From Northern and mountain cultures, music for meditation and healing
invests these desires with the subtlety of art, and offers us deep interior
journeys in pure sound.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another program in our
resonant metals series called WINTRY BRONZE. The title is derived
from a poem by WALLACE STEVENS, who observed "the life that is fluent,
even in the wintriest bronze" and wrote of "the listener, who listens in the snow/
And, nothing himself, beholds/ Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is."

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 6-Feb-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : In the waning days of winter, change comes creeping across the landscape.
The northern latitudes remain frozen in tones of gray, white and brown. Farther south,
the first glints of spring are still a subtle presence. We float...in a zone of incremental
transition, unmoored and vulnerable.
It's a time of regression and release from winter's static grip, a time for subtle,
and latent promise.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a transitional electronic journey for winter
...called TERRA STATICA.

INTRO : Marooned in the depths of darkness, battered by storms,
cold and tired, ready for change. Does that sound like a metaphor
for the economy? Maybe it's just the weather. Either way,
what we need this week is a double dip of warmth and soul
to chase away the winter blues.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we banish those indigo,
cerulean and cobalt feelings...with a program called HAVEN.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 6-Mar-2009

INTRO : In good times, life moves swiftly, with little time for reflection.
Confusion and chaos rule the day.
In stormy times, the wise remain calm, even when the world around them
is in turmoil. Turbulence may destroy structures that lack a firm foundation,
but this is necessary to build stronger ones. In nature and society,
excess must be corrected. Destruction is also the path to renewal.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an electro-ambient journey
for turbulent times called INTO THE STORM.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a trans-seasonal journey
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 19-Mar-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The progression of the seasons is our context, a basic fact of life.
Yet there's hardly anything more powerful, pervasive or profound.
From the frigid, binding grip of winter, we emerge in spring into a world
stirring with change and new life.
It begins with subtle sounds: the melting of ice, the rustle of the forest,
the singing of birds, the trickle of streams. Slowly, inexorably, the
natural world awakes; the light grows brighter, and we begin to move.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a trans-seasonal journey
called WINTER INTO SPRING.

INTRO : The transition between winter and spring is never predictable.
After a time of darkness and confinement, we long for light, air and freedom.
We seek change: space and openness, movement and flow.
Filled with new purpose, we clean out old structures. In uncertain times,
we shine the light into dark places, and prepare for the challenges ahead.
Transparency is the new watchword, the key to trust.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a collection of freshly grown and
gracefully aged electronica for the season, on a program called TRANSPARENT SPRING.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 3-Apr-2009

INTRO : Many aspects of traditional Japanese culture originated in China.
The Japanese spring custom of cherry blossom viewing or hanami
goes back to the 8th century, but it was inspired by the Chinese aristocracy.
Today the progress of the sakura, or cherry blossom wave (as it moves north
across Japan) is a regular feature of the spring weather reports. Y
ou gotta love a country that has a cherry blossom report.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we think of cherry blossoms
while we journey in the East Asian soundscape on a program called SAKURA.

PGM 872 : "AMAZING GRACE"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : 15 variations of the classic hymn for Easter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 10-Apr-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : If popularity is the measure, the English hymn "Amazing Grace"
must be one of the most beloved songs in existence. We found over 6400
versions of it on just one online music site! It's been recorded by everyone
from Elvis to The 3 Tenors to the Cherokee National Youth Choir, and
including Maori, Reggae, Heavy Metal, and Doo Wop.
The hymn comes with a good story. The words were written around 1772
by an English slave trader turned Christian preacher named JOHN NEWTON.
The pentatonic melody first appeared in hymn books around 1829 and
was called "New Britain." It's thought to be Scottish or Irish originally,
which accounts for the many versions featuring the bagpipes.
On this Easter week transmission of Hearts of Space, we spread the love
with a program conceived by longtime guest producer ELLEN HOLMES
and devoted entirely to our most popular hymn...AMAZING GRACE.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : You're listening to the mysterious "Fourth World" music of
trumpeter/composer JON HASSELL: an apparition arising out of the
hazy cross-cultural soundscape between classical Indian vocal music,
electronics, and cool jazz. It's a sound that's been widely influential
hybrid that defies category...by design.

On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we invoke the spirits of
departed masters like cool jazz trumpeter MILES DAVIS, Indian vocalist
PANDIT PRAN NATH and electronics pioneer KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN

unpredictable insight await.

PGM NOTE : the sublime world of Indian ambient and devotional music
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 8-May-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The drone...the modal scale...the sinuous, ornamented melodic line.
Even without a sitar or a tabla, you know you're enveloped in one of the new
Indian influenced strains of ambient music.
Hundreds of years ago, while Western music turned right at polyphony, harmony,
and the equal-tempered scale, Indian classical music continued to develop
the old modal system of scales and natural intervals in a vocal-centered, monophonic style.
Where we created chords and counterpoint, monumental symphonies, hymns and songs,
Indian music continued to evolve the melodic sophistication of raga, the rhythmic complexity
of tala, and the patient pursuit of mood and depth.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we return to the sublime world of Indian ambient
and devotional music...on a program called INDIA EVOLUTION.

PGM NOTE : electronic chill and flamenco fusion meet sacred chant
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 22-May-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : There's some kind of magic in the unlikely combination of
Medieval Latin chants, electronics and sultry female vocals.
Invented by VANGELIS in 1975, it's a sound that caught a huge wave
back in 1990 when ENIGMA added dance beats to the mix.
Thanks to Romanian mastermind MICHAEL CRETU, it's not only
remembered fondly today, it's still evolving in the work of Cretu,
as well as other musicians and producers.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we revisit the ethereal
beats at the intersection of electronic chill, atmospheric dance,
Flamenco and sacred chant...on a program called SACRED AND PROFANE.

PGM NOTE : a Western-style electron-guitar journey
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

INTRO : Well, spacefans, we started out doing a summer acoustic show,
but it morphed into a western style slide guitar and pedal steel show,
and then into a "western landscape" show. Think canyons.
But wait, it wasn't done. It took a head fake toward the Native American flute,
but on the way it shapeshifted into something more ethereal: call it "pedal steel atmospherica."
Whatever...time for a title to tie it all together: I'm STEVIE RAY HILL and on this transmission
of Hearts of Space, a sultry journey in western spaces called SUSTAINABLE WAVES.
Actually, we borrowed that title from SUSTAINABLEWAVES.COM of Austin, Texas.
They build them very cool, new, green solar powered stages and location sound.
These dudes don't just abide...they sustain.

Long before the turmoil of today, the Middle East sat at the crossroads
of ancient civilization, and its music records a history of shared influences f
rom North Africa, Egypt, Persia, Turkey, Greece, and the 600-year Moorish
occupation of medieval Spain, the storied Al-Andalus.
Today our crossroads are urban and digital, and musicians from
all over the world gather in studios, on stages, and online to combine
elements of electronic, folk, classical and world music into an evolving
barriers, and taking a step into the future.

PGM 880 : "ALI AKBAR KHAN"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a memorial tribute to the North Indian classical master
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 10-Jul-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : When the history of North Indian music in the 20th and 21st centuries is written,
one of the giants of the story will be ALI AKBAR KHAN, who passed away at his home
here in Northern California on June 18th, 2009, at the age of 87.
By any measure Khansahib, as he was called by his thousands of students and admirers,
was an extraordinary musician who led an extraordinary life. On this special transmission
of Hearts of Space, we celebrate his life, his playing, and his enormous contribution to
contemporary music.
It was ALI AKBAR KHAN and his fellow student RAVI SHANKAR, with the help of violinist
YEHUDI MENUHIN, who truly brought Indian classical music to the west beginning in 1955.
Menuhin called him "an absolute genius...perhaps the greatest musician in the world."
ALI AKBAR KHAN was born in East Bengal (now Bangladesh) in 1922. At the time, his father
ALLAUDIN KHAN was already a major figure in Indian music, and was established as
the chief musician at the court of the Maharaja of Maihar in central India. It was here that
Ali Akbar Khan grew up and became his father's student.
Hindustani music originated in Vedic times over 3000 years ago and was originally based
on the singing of sacred texts. This legacy gave North Indian classical music a serious,
devotional quality, but eventually the full range of emotional experiences were incorporated into the music.
In Indian music, the system of ragas or "seed compositions" on which the player improvises,
has developed over many generations of oral transmission. Raga is the basis of both performance
practice and the teaching tradition embodied in the musical guru/disciple relationship.
Ali Akbar Khan received this tradition from his father and passed it on to generations of
students during a lifetime of teaching, concertizing and composing.
His father Allaudin Khan, who lived to be 110(!) and is said to have played over 200 instruments,
decided that young Ali Akbar would concentrate on just one: the sarode, a fretless Indian instrument
6 for rhythm, and 15 drone or sympathetic strings for harmonics and ambience. The instrument
is made of teak, with a goatskin diaphragm stretched over a resonator, and a polished metal fingerboard.
With his sarode, his tradition, and the power of his teaching, Ali Akbar Khan moved...the world of music.
While each raga is designed for a specific time of day, on this program we feature selections from several
ragas from Ali Akbar Khan's dozens of recordings: a Morning Meditation from the album JOURNEY; two alap
Raga Gauri Manjari; and the most famous of his original compositions, Raga Chandranandan from
SIGNATURE SERIES, Volume 1. Finally, the evening raga Darbari Kanra, from the album GARDEN of DREAMS.
In tone, technique, phrasing, mood and depth, you'll hear the work of a master musician at his peak.
A tribute to ALI AKBAR KHAN...on this edition...of Hearts of Space.

INTRO : What looks like an elegant flying saucer, sounds like a more melodious cousin
of the steel pan drum, and is the first new musical instrument of the 21st century?
and pronounced "hong." Invented in Bern, Switzerland in 2000 by veteran steel pan makers
FELIX ROHNER and SABINA SCHAERER, hang means "hand" in the Bernese Swiss German dialect.
After several generations of intense development, it's become a highly refined instrument tuned to a
pentatonic minor scale and played...with the hands. It's also become something of a phenomenon
among the worldwide community of resonant percussionists, and you're about to hear why.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we ride the warm, harmonic tones of the hang on a
delightfully hypnotic journey called HANG GLIDING. (Sorry, couldn't resist).

INTRO : The music of the vast African continent is many-faceted and influential. Our colleagues

dance music with a joy-per-minute index that's off the charts.
Yet along with the dancing and celebration, we find moving ballads, lullabies, ambient and
contemplative pieces, especially in the West African countries of Mali and Senegal.
It's a rhythmic, soulful sound, featuring melodic percussion instruments like the mbira and the balafon,
and the West African harp called the kora.

PGM 886 : "TANGERINE DREAMING"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a Tangerine Dream retrospective
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 4-Sep-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Now there's a sound that's sure to warm the heart of any aficionado
of vintage analog electronics and classic tape loop echo: the seminal
German band TANGERINE DREAM from their celebrated 1974 album Phaedra.
With a name inspired by a then-popular brand of LSD, Tangerine Dream, or T.DREAM
to their legions of fans over the last 40 plus years, has probably done more to influence
composers of instrumental ambient, space, and electronic dance music than anyone else,
in a career that includes almost 100 albums, over 80 compilations, 39 film scores, and
hundreds of live concerts all over the world.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a retrospective look at highlights of an epic career
that's still going strong, called TANGERINE DREAMING.
The only constant of Tangerine Dream has been founder EDGAR FROESE. Under his direction,
the group has navigated over three dozen personnel changes and still been amazingly productive.
Striking out from the Berlin art school scene in 1967, Froese and his early colleagues KLAUS SCHULZE,
CONRAD SCHNITZLER, CHRISTOPHER FRANKE, PETER BAUMANN, and later JOHANNES SCHMOELLING
and PAUL HASLINGER, charted just the right course between electronic experimentation, ambient atmospherics,
'classical' minimalism, and melodic popular music.
They must have been doing something right, because they took off in the early 1970s and have burned brightly
for over 30 years. Writer JOHN BUSH says "the recordings of Tangerine Dream had the greatest impact on the
widest variety of instrumental music during the 1980s and '90s, from the most atmospheric new age and
space music to the harshest abrasions of electronic dance."
With almost 40 years of music to choose from, there's just no way to sum up T.DREAM in an hour,
and we're not going to try. So this show is a collection of mostly early pieces (and some 1980s film music)
from the era when the dream of unlimited electronic sound, fuelled by mind-expanding chemistry, ambition and
commerce, inspired artists to swing for the galaxies with their music. Even if they never got to Alpha Centauri,
they pushed the envelope a long, long way.

PGM NOTE : the sublime art of Middle Eastern improvisation
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 25-Sep-2009

INTRO : The music of the greater Middle East includes a range of cultures that stretched from Andalusian Spain and North Africa, through Turkish, Arabic, and desert lands to Persia and beyond. While these countries famously have their political differences, they also share a rich history of cultural exchange, common families of instruments, and musical traditions.
One of these is the art of taksim or improvisation within the modal system of notes and scales called makam. "Taksim" says Stellamara, "offers the player an infinite language to express the otherwise inexpressible...to travel far beyond imagination into the depths of places intimately known and never before experienced."
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey in Middle Eastern scales and improvisation called TAKSIM.

Societies and cultures go through their own transitions. Sometimes they're welcomed; more often, they are resisted, even feared. In nature, the wise, the lucky, and the flexible evolve and learn to adapt.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we ride the receding energy of summer as it descends into fall, on a program called TIME OF TRANSITION.

INTRO : After the fiery days of summer, a spacefan's ear retunes to the mellowing notes and darkening tone colors of autumn. As the sun withdraws and the days grow short, it's time for some laid-back ambient jazz.
It's hard to say what makes it ambient. Jazz is generally all about dialogue between great players, but some of them have a contemplative bent, and a taste for larger, slower, deeper spaces. Above all, they listen...for the spaces between the notes.

PGM NOTE : new ambient dimensions in Native American music
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 20-Nov-2009
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The story of contemporary Native American music goes back to 1951 and the founding of Canyon Records in Phoenix, Arizona. In the almost 60 years since then, traditional forms have been revived, renewed and celebrated, and new styles have emerged from the creative energy of native and western musicians.
From his first Canyon album in 1983, Navajo musician R. CARLOS NAKAI has worked tirelessly to re-establish the Native American cedar flute as an instrument for healing and meditation, extending it far beyond its origins into folk, jazz, country, classical, new age and ambient music. In these new ambient soundscapes, we enter a world of reverence, mystery and ceremony, haunted by the voices of ancient spirits.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we focus on the new ambient dimensions in Native American music...on a journey called TOUCHING THE SKY.

We turn from the dark times of Scorpio to the season of light; internalize the spirit of gratitude we feel for friends and family and the good fortune we have...and perhaps watch a bit of football while we polish off the last of those endless turkey sandwiches.
At Hearts of Space, it's time for us to return to our theme of virtual travel through music. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an ambient acoustic journey for late autumn called IMAGINARY ROADS.
