PGM 827 : "WINTER LIGHT"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a cold day journey in blue-grey soundscapes
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 4-Jan-2008
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Winter...the chill creeps into your bones, while the darkness steals into your psyche. For most of us,
life slows a bit and moves indoors, but for those hardy souls with the metabolism to venture out into the landscape,
a world of subtle colors awaits, with deep vistas of heightened clarity, or atmospheric effects of fog, rain, and snow.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a cold day journey in blue-grey soundscapes called WINTER LIGHT.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 1-Feb-2008
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : We live in a time of extreme contrasts: while one part of the world enjoys unlimited material comfort,
another suffers strife, hunger and disease. High tech magic is just a border away from descendents of stone-age tribes.
Ancient conflicts divide neighbors, while a global economy links nations half a world apart.
Propelled by these contrasts, today music floats freely around the globe, cross-pollinating and gene-splicing
the sounds of cultures from primitive to sophisticated. In the midst of this astonishing diversity sits a new breed
of composer: conscious of tradition but not limited by it, transmitting the deep soul messages of their culture
across time and space with a new freedom of creative expression.
Classical cellist YO-YO MA's Silk Road Ensemble, for example, draws musicians from an array of Asian and
Middle Eastern cultures into fluid collaborations with the orchestra, while solo artists from many countries invent
new contexts for the ancient instruments of their homelands.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 8-Feb-2008
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : You know, I've never seen a good explanation for it, but there's something about the intangibility of electronic
sounds that naturally link them to images of space. From early PINK FLOYD to classic German spacemusic to the
Ambient sound sculptors of today, space is the place you wind up.
Of course, acoustic instruments can make space and ambient music, but it takes the right sound environment and a lot of extra work;
electronic sounds seem to originate in space...and provide the perfect sonic vehicle for traveling through it.
I'm STEPHEN HILL and on this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we're going to do just that, on an electronic spacemusic journey
called GALACTIC TRAVELER.

PGM 830 : "DAVID DARLING RETROSPECTIVE"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : soulful lyricism from the revered American cellist
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 2-15-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: If all the press about the troubles in the music business has you concerned, consider the career of cellist
DAVID DARLING to revive your spirits. Born in Elkhart, Indiana in 1941, Darling began his career as a music educator.
He joined The PAUL WINTER CONSORT in 1970, and stayed with the pioneering classical/jazz/ world fusion
ensemble on and off until 1987. At the same time, he played cello in the Nashville Symphony and worked as a studio
session player in Nashville when we wasn't touring.
In 1979 Darling met German producer and ECM Records founder MANFRED EICHER. His first solo album
JOURNAL OCTOBER was released by ECM in 1980. Over the next 25 years, he played and recorded with an absolutely
stellar roster of jazz and classical musicians on ECM, did over a dozen highly praised collaborations and group projects,
worked with writers and directors (including WIM WENDERS and JEAN-LUC GODARD) on film scoring projects, and
continued his music education activities by co-founding Music For People, a non-profit organization promoting individual
expression through music and improvisation. To call him tireless, inspired and inspiring doesn't even begin to cover it.
Yet he remains one of the warmest, most open people you'll ever meet, a quality that comes across instantly in his solo concerts.
Over the last 25 years, DAVID DARLING has been one of the foundation artists of HEARTS of SPACE, appearing on 43
programs, starting with our debut program in 1983. With its gentle open-hearted lyricism, simplicity, and patience,
his music achieves a rare depth and humanity.

INTRO: Sitting in front of a nine foot concert grand piano...is
like sitting at the wheel of an expensive luxury sedan. The smell

finely designed machine.

The ivory keys?...the polished steering wheel.
The view out the window?...infinite driving possibility.
The view over the strings?...an infinite road to pure musical
imagination.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we put ourselves in
the hands of musicians who drive the piano into contemplative
soundscapes, on a program called PIANISSIMO.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: If musical genres had birthdays, electronic music would
now be over a hundred years old. The first playable instruments
appeared around the 1920s, but things really got going in 1957
with the invention of the first vacuum tube synthesizer. You can
still see this electronic fossil at the Columbia-Princeton
Electronic Music Center at Columbia University in New York City.
Since then, electronic music has been on a roll, merging with
the computer to breed new instruments and new sounds in a 50-year
period of continuous evolution. On this transmission of HEARTS
of SPACE, another excursion in the electronic soundscape called
KONTINUUM.
The famous "space-time continuum" in physics merges 3-dimensional
space and time into a single four-dimensional construct. In music,
as in science, a continuum is something that retains a common
character from beginning to end, and changes by regular degrees.
The music on this program fits that definition.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 3-14-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: By our count, this is the 40th program in the HEARTS of
SPACE series inspired by the wistful charms of the Celtic ballad.
The big trend in Celtic music has receded, but we return to it,
not only to honor the Saint Patrick's Day celebration, but because
it's so musically and emotionally rewarding. Celtic music has deep
roots in the human experience, lovingly shared and developed from
generation to generation.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we continue our journey
in the pan-Celtic soundscape with a program called GENERATIONS.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a new age taste of spring
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 3-28-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: Way back in 1986, the Recording Academy in its wisdom
decided to give an official name and a Grammy award to a popular
new sound in instrumental music. Unfortunately, they chose the
name "New Age" music. 22 years later it sounds...insane. What were
they thinking? What kind of music could possibly live up to an
expectation like that?
As a marketing category, things got off to a bad start. Musical
categories are never 100% precise, but this was anarchy. Every kind
of instrumental music that wasn't obviously jazz, folk or classical
was dumped into the New Age bins. The home studio revolution was in
full swing, so just about any artist that released an instrumental
album wound up there.
When cross-cultural saxophonist YUSEF LATEEF won the first
New Age Grammy in 1987, he had to call his producer and ask "What
is this 'new age' and why are they calling my album that?".
With no filters and no standards, the genre soon had a reputation
for inconsistent quality and boring music. After a few years the
trend peaked, and both artists and listeners moved on. Some of the
electronic music formerly known as New Age came to be called
Ambient; the New Age handle had become a marketing taboo.
In 25 years of Hearts of Space, we've rarely mentioned the term,
while trying to bring you the best examples of electronic space,
ambient and contemplative music -- all of which were once called
New Age. See, that's the thing: you could hate the name and still
find excellent music there. Well, if Barack Obama can talk about
political taboos like race and hope in his presidential campaign,
we can certainly take a moment to reflect on what's good about
new age music, while not denying any of its faults.
The core quality of the new age genre is music that's gentle,
peaceful and harmonious. While most music is designed to stimulate,
the word "relaxing" is joined to it at the hip. The best of it is
"psycho-acoustic" : psychologically and emotionally stimulating,
even when it's physically relaxing. Most of us can use a little of
that. As we say....slow music for fast times.
As a form of sonic landscape, new age music aims to create images
of heaven on earth -- just as gardens did for centuries in the
Middle East and Asia. The best new age artists are skilled
sound designers and producers, who create very sophisticated
sonic environments. On this edition of Hearts of Space, a new age
taste of spring.

PGM NOTE : Far East contemplative sounds from China and Japan
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 4-04-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: This week we find inspiration in a very strange place for
Hearts of Space: the world of martial arts film soundtracks.
How martial arts and contemplative music relate...requires a bit
of explanation. Chinese words are made of shorter words put
together. The normal translation of the Chinese word "wu" is
fighting or military, while "shu" is art. Wushu, therefore, means
"the art of fighting" or martial arts.
But there's a more philosophical translation, where "wu" is not
"fighting" but "to stop fighting," and "shu" means "technique."
So traditional Chinese wushu is about the technique of stopping
or averting conflict. According to film director RONNY YU, "the
better you are at wushu, the better peacemaker you are." Now
there's a message that's relevant today.
So if the most skillful form of conflict leads to peace, then the
most effective martial arts music should exhibit calm, balance,
and serenity. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a journey
in the world of Far East contemplative sound called WUSHU.

INTRO: Floating through the long transition between winter and
spring...in times of uncertainty, we hold back, restrain action,
and wait. Patience and experience help us endure the time. We
relax, observe the signs, quietly mark the changes, remain ready
for what comes next.
In music, a suspension is an extended tone connecting one chord
with the following chord, often marked by a temporary dissonance.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a floating journey for
a time of transition and temporary dissonance called SUSPENSION.

PGM NOTE : an acoustic excursion in the American soundscape
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 4-25-08
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The rich, slow, slightly dissonant acoustic guitar
harmonies of WILL ACKERMAN. It's the sound that launched the
Windham Hill label in 1976 and re-energized what pioneering
steel-string guitarist JOHN FAHEY called the "American
primitive guitar."
Primitive because the emphasis was on personal experimentation
and emotional authenticity; American because it drew upon our
popular songs, blues, jazz, maverick classical, ethnic rhythms
freely reinvented.
With 30 years perspective, we can see that Ackerman struck a
deep vein in American culture and enriched it with a new level
of quality. His success inspired a generation of acoustic
musicians to trust their instincts, stick to their instruments,
keep it simple...and from the heart.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, another acoustic
excursion in the American soundscape called AMERICAN PRIMITIVE.

INTRO : As we stream into the 21st century, the rich legacy of Indian music continues to expand around the world.
Seen as a kind of exotic 'seasoning' when classical masters like ALI AKBAR KHAN and RAVI SHANKAR came to
the west in the 1950s, it survived its trendy status as a psychedelic curiosity in the 1960s, and has gone on to
influence several generations of western musicians, from avant-garde and electronic to devotional.
In an age of rapid innovation and stylistic change, Indian music has proven to be amazingly durable due to its
best musicians in its orbit.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another journey in the Indian music orbit called PLANET INDIA.

PGM NOTE : the contemplative minimalism of Italian composer LUDOVICO EINAUDI
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 30-May-2008
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The Italian composer LUDOVICO EINAUDI has enjoyed a long and very successful career in Europe,
marked by a dozen albums, fifteen film scores, hundreds of concerts and a retrospective performance at the
famous opera house La Scala in Milano.
Einaudi began in the 1970s as a student of Italian avant-garde composer LUCIANO BERIO at the Conservatory
of Milan. He came to the U.S. on a scholarship in 1982, where he absorbed the language of classical minimalism,
Like fine Italian food, fashion and design, Einaudi's music has a humanized opulence and sensual appeal.
The elements are simple and often repetitive, but the effect is subtle, contemplative, satisfying, even profound.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a LUDIVICO EINAUDI retrospective called DIVENIRE. We have music
from across his career, including selections from STANZE, LE ONDE, I GIORNI, EDEN ROC, our title album
DIVENIRE or "Become," and his lush soundtrack for the film SOTTO FALSO NOME.

INTRO: The Cosmic Journey school of electronic spacemusic includes
soundtracks for imaginary sci-fi movies, deep-drifting stellar
soundscapes, and spiritual innerspace explorations. With its tonal
flights across the galaxies and vast cosmic dramas, the genre
appeared to be an artifact of the 1980s. Like progressive rock, it
considerable success...and the fact that it takes real inspiration
and talent to do it well.
Artists like CONSTANCE DEMBY, IASOS and MICHAEL STEARNS in
California, JONN SERRIE in Atlanta, VANGELIS and KLAUS SCHULZE
in Europe, TOMITA, STOMU YAMASHTA and KITARO in Japan created an
ethereal, expansive, cosmic sound that found kindred spirits in
symphonic composers like GUSTAV HOLST, RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS,
ALAN HOVHANESS, and the monumental sound cathedrals of BACH.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space called STELLAR VISIONS,
we're pleased to report that the genre's still alive, with

INTRO : Every July 4th, we celebrate America's independence with food, fun, and fireworks. For as long
This year, our celebration is tempered by a growing awareness of the great challenges we face in national,
global and even planetary affairs. You have to look back to the 1930s to find a comparable period,
but even those challenges seem limited by comparison.
So this year we celebrate the founding of America with the knowledge that American ideals and the
American character are being tested. If Americans can respond positively to the challenges we face,
we may look back on this period as the time of America's maturity.

we listen for the reflective side of the American soundscape...on a program called AMERICAN CROSSROADS.

INTRO : It's all so clear in retrospect. The electronic music revolution of the 1970s empowered artists
to explore a new palette of ethereal sounds and unnatural atmospheres. In less than 10 years,
a new musical language emerged in Europe, the U.S., and Japan, and spread around the world.
By the 1980s, they looked around...and it was good.
But it didn't take long before a few of these artists realized that something was missing: the vital,
rhythmic foundation of ethnic and primitive music, famously built into rock from the African roots
of Rhythm & Blues. Just as early 20th century painters looked to Africa, Polynesia, and other ancient
The moment was marked by STEVE ROACH's famous trip to the Australian outback and his 1988 album
"Dreamtime Return," a title that wraps up the idea in two well-chosen words. But other artists were moving
in this direction, first crossing cultural barriers and then heading back in time, to the roots of music and sound itself.
electronics, atmospherics, ethnic percussion (rainsticks, rattles, drums), and didgeridoos. The combination
possessed some of the psychedelic powers of its shamanic forbears, and it lives on today.

INTRO : Here in the days of "water cubes" and Olympic size indoor pools, summer is the time we renew

And when we do, one of the most agreeable sensations is one of the simplest: just...floating.
Floating is the goal-less, relaxed, "here and now" side of swimming. And it's also something we enjoy in space
and ambient music, as we float in oceans and rivers...of sound. On this transmission of Hearts of Space,
a journey called THE FLOAT ZONE.

popularized by creative, eclectic arrangers like MARTIN DENNY and JUAN-GARCIA ESQUIVEL.
Lovingly revived in the early 1990s under the banner "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music" or just
"Space Age Pop," its influences are still with us in the quietly expanding genres of Chill, Downtempo,
Ambient Lounge and other variants of laid-back electronic exotica.
The appeal is clear: a nice cold cocktail, some cool beats and ambient electronics makes
a perfectly relaxing space for socializing. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a
retro-future-ambient-lounge journey called TIKITRONICA. Turn it up and call your friends...

INTRO : Summer might actually seem endless in these globally warmed days, but eventually
even the sun submits to the laws of orbital geometry, and our northern hemisphere begins to cool
as it tilts away from the sun. In music, the change of seasons is marked by a slower pace,
a darker mood, and a tinge of melancholy in the harmonies. With its naturally bittersweet tonality,
it's a good time to revisit the ambient acoustic guitar.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an end-of-summer, mostly acoustic guitar journey called AFTERBURN.

PGM NOTE : the poetic world of Persian fusion
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 26-Sep-2008
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Iran was in the news again this week, as its president gave a theology lecture to members
of the United Nations General Assembly. Iran's nuclear program and involvement with the conflict
in Iraq could hardly be more controversial, and all the political smoke effectively obscures the work of
Persian artists and musicians working to enrich an artistic tradition that extends back before recorded history.
Parvaz is the Persian word for flight, and it's a rich metaphor for a culture that has grown wings
outside its homeland. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we fly into the sublime world of
Persian fusion music ...on a program called PARVAZ.
The rise of a fundamentalist Islamic theocracy in Iran in the 1980s had one unintended consequence:
it helped to resurrect Persian classical music, which had been devalued in the era of Western cultural influences.
That process continues today, underground in Iran, and in Europe and the U.S., where Persian artists are
fusing elements from their traditions with contemporary sounds and instruments from other cultures.

INTRO : In the early 1970s, English guitarist ROBERT FRIPP (of the seminal progressive rock band KING CRIMSON)
began a series of experiments with tape delay echo loops that he came to call "Frippertronics."
Fripp's collaboration with fellow electronic experimentalist BRIAN ENO yielded two influential albums of treated electric
guitar and synthesizers. NO PUSSYFOOTING (from 1972) and EVENING STAR (in 1974) defined a new sound: the

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 17-Oct-2008
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Slow, reverent, in tune and in time with the rhythms of nature:
that's the signature feeling of the Native American flute. Since its revival
at the hands of a new generation of native musicians in the 1960s,
its gentle tones can now be heard on hundreds of albums and soundtracks.
But it seems most resonant during Indian summer and autumn, when the
light dims, and smoke settles over the fading tones of the natural world.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a Native flute journey across
the great western plateau...called LOST CANYONS.

PGM NOTE : an autumnal excursion for piano and cello
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 24-Oct-2008
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : In the pantheon of immortal combinations of musical instruments,
there must be a special temple for the piano and cello. It's hard to think of
another duo that offers more musical possibilities, or draws more effectively
on the respective strengths of both instruments.
From the piano, we get effortless rhythmic definition, chords, and harmonies;
from the cello, long, singing lines and rich overtones that stretch melody to
the boundaries of expression. Together, they define a musical landscape of
emotional range, depth, and beauty.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we celebrate the piano and cello...
on an autumnal journey derived from the Byzantine hymns, traditional folk
and sacred Sufi music of Central Asia...called MELOS.

but infused with hope. This year the transition takes on a special meaning,

INTRO : When musical tradition meets creative innovation, just about anything can happen.
The results can be harmonious or dissonant, fascinating or boring, exciting or torpid.
These days, you can find experiments of all kinds in the blandly named "new music" genre.
From the deliberate iconoclasm of descendents of the 20th century Avant-Garde to the
stirring pulses of the minimalists, the heady abstractions of the conceptualists, or the
and adapted into new forms.
On this late autumn transmission of Hearts of Space, we explore the intersection of classical form
and ambient space, with a program of introspective journeys called DUSK TO DUSK.
