PGM 790 : "INTERSTELLAR"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a cosmic electronic journey
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 12-Jan-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Surfing the void...exploring the vastness of interstellar space. In fact, astrophysicists tell us,
the void is not really empty: it's full of gas, dust, and plasma / ions, atoms, and molecules /
It's the stuff of dreams and fantasy, the domain of science fiction, the mission of NASA...
and it's a virtual journey we can take anytime with a little help from our travel agents of cosmic electronica.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we suit up for a deep space journey called INTERSTELLAR.

INTRO : The polar night creeps southward across the top of Europe, while the winter snows and ice hold the fjords
and forests in their grip. In a land of dark and cold, the focus turns within, and the music of Scandinavia, the Baltics
and Russia warms the heart and fills the soul. Classical, jazz and traditional folk sounds stretch from melancholy
to an ethereal lightness: slow, majestic and beautiful.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a journey beyond the north wind
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 16-Feb-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Among the myths we've inherited from the ancient Greeks, there's one about a "land beyond the north wind,"
a kind of arctic paradise where the sun always shines and people live for a thousand years. Since the north wind was
named borea, and the Greeks weren't sure where this magical land actually was, they simply called it hyper-borea:
beyond...the north wind.
In the two and a half millennia since those mythy days of Greece, the term has not been forgotten: it's been used
in literature by Nietzsche, James Joyce, Robert Howard, Stephen King, and H.P. Lovecraft; in films, comics and
video games; by TANGERINE DREAM as an album title, BIOSPHERE as a piece title, and as the name of a Finnish
folk group, and not least, a Bulgarian 'death metal' rock band.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we'll be a bit more restrained, on a journey beyond the north wind
called HYPERBOREA.

PGM NOTE : a RICHARD BURMER retrospective
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 23-Feb-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Composer RICHARD BURMER was born in Michigan in 1955 and died there far too young in 2006.
Like many very talented creators, he struggled with depression, and his demons eventually overcame him.
But in a brief, fruitful 20 year career, he created some extraordinary music that helped fulfill the early promise
of electronic music as a popular art.
After studying music in college, Richard was drawn to the burgeoning electronic music community in California.
Moving to Los Angeles in the late 1970s, he worked as an engineer designing synthesizers for several innovative
companies while perfecting his own music. Portly, bespectacled, intense and unconcerned with appearances,
he was one of those people who contradicted every stereotype about Los Angeles. After getting a record deal
and releasing his first successful albums, he had enough and returned to Michigan for good.
His music bore influences from Medieval, Renaissance, and Indian music to Progressive Rock. It was always
more musical than electronic ...and immaculately crafted. We'll be hearing selections from four of Richard Burmer's
five solo albums: BHAKTI POINT, MOSAIC, INVENTION, and ON THE THIRD EXTREME, plus two pieces from
WESTERN SPACES, his joint album with STEVE ROACH and KEVIN BRAHENY.

to essential, deeply human emotions.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 13-Apr-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The occupation of the remote Himalayan country of Tibet by China in 1949 forced an ancient non-violent Buddhist culture
to escape to northern India and Nepal, and from there, to spread around the world. In this way, the folk and religious music and spirituality
of Tibet came to the west, along with musicians, artists, monks and teachers like the Dalai Lama.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we focus on the gentle sounds of Tibetan folk music...on a program called MESSENGERS OF PEACE.

a transmission, or a spiritual healing. Whatever you call it, in music you know it when you hear it, and there's a
venerable genre of Indian music dedicated to it that's been embraced and extended by Western musicians.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we return to the ardent, timeless, devotional sound of Indian music
on a program called...DEEKSHA.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : new sounds from the international electronic soundscape
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 11-May-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Well, spacefan, this time it's a fresh collection of psycho-acoustic experiments from Norway, Switzerland,
England, California, Ohio, Vermont, and not least: mighty little Rhode Island. The textures are mostly electronic,
but acoustic sounds still play a big role. In many cases, you really can't say what the sound _is_ ...and that's the point.
We're living in an inter-national, supra-cultural, technically-enhanced music matrix, and the results are diverse beyond imagination.
Genre names don't last long in this creative environment. A few years ago, we'd have called this show electronica
or ambient, but today some of the artists would object if we did. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE,
we'll look for a congenial harbor amongst the creative flux. Let's call it ARGUABLY POST-AMBIENT.

PGM 808 : "ATLAS DEI"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : Robert Rich's music for the art film ATLAS DEI
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 13-Jul-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Ambient composer ROBERT RICH is one of the cardinal artists of Hearts of Space. We started working
with him in the 1970s when we were still a local radio program and he had yet to release his first cassette recording.
(You do remember cassettes, don't you?).
From his early experiments with homemade analog synthesizers and extended improvisations to his mature masterpieces,
Robert Rich and Hearts of Space have grown and developed together for over 30 years.
We did a retrospective program of Robert's music at the turn of the millennium, covering his recordings from the 1980's
to 2000. Since then, not only has he been extraordinarily productive, in 2007 he released his own compilation of his previous work.
Rather than a simple retrospective selection, he composed new pieces, modified or remixed others, and tied the music
to a remarkable DVD art film in surround sound called ATLAS DEI, produced with digital artist and filmmaker DANIEL COLVIN.
The film is described as "a lyrical journey through time and space into the mystery of our cosmos...weaving the strands
of science, myth, and poetic vision into an eloquent tapestry of the human enigma."
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, ROBERT RICH'S elegant electro-acoustic Music From 'ATLAS DEI.'

PGM 809 : "AFRICAN GENESIS"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a journey into the quiet heart of Africa
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 20-Jul-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The lilting songs of the Baka pygmies of Cameroon have achieved international fame through the efforts
of sympathetic Western musicians. Just as DNA research has shown that Africa is the origin point of the human species,
originally laying the foundation for blues, jazz and other forms of popular music, and more recently, spawning a host
of brilliant variations of what we now call World Music.
While the majority of African music is for dance and celebration, there's also a more contemplative sound. On this transmission
of HEARTS of SPACE, we journey through the rhythms into the quiet heart of African music...on a program called AFRICAN GENESIS.

In the words of EDWARD ABBEY, the desert is a "window onto eternity."

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 10-Aug-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Modern Turkish music has come to us through a path as complex and ornamental as Turkish calligraphy.
Located in the Eastern Mediterranean at the gateway to Central Asia, for centuries Turkey was an economic and
cultural crossroads, absorbing influences from Persian, Byzantine, Southern European, and Middle Eastern traditions
...and cross-pollinating them with its own rich heritage.
For most of the 600 years of the Ottoman empire, Turkey dominated the region. When KEMAL ATATURK consciously
modernized Turkey in the 20th century, western classical and popular music were added to an already complex
cultural mix, and today Istanbul has one of the most vibrant and varied musical scenes anywhere.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a journey in the Turkish soundscape called CRESCENT MOON.

The ancient arts of Yoga and Tai Chi teach us how to find a calm center in the midst of constant movement.
And a group of ambient electronic artists make music that creates this sense of tranquility...in motion.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a journey in mythic soundworlds
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 24-Aug-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : One of the great inspirations to brilliant computer programmers and offbeat artists everywhere is the story
in 1993, the MYST franchise evolved through four sequels and a spinoff, sold over 12 million games and
six soundtrack albums, three novels, several comics, and an online version.
Inspired by Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island," from the beginning the Miller brothers blazed their own trail, setting new
content and visual standards, and ultimately changing the way people played computer games.
In a world of gory, violent "first person shooters," MYST invented its own category, with immersive environments of stunning
artistic quality, texture and atmosphere, and a focus on puzzle-solving in a moral universe driven by a mythic story.
The original music of MYST was the work of ROBYN MILLER. In addition to his graphic talents, he was a fine
ambient/electronic musician. Subtle, deep and atmospheric, his music set the tone for the emotional experience of MYST. Sequels were scored by ROBYN MILLER, JACK WALL, and TIM LARKIN.

INTRO : If you're not an aficionado of Early Music, you may not have heard of it, but the ancestor of the guitar
was the vihuela, also called the viola da mano. With six sets of double strings tuned like a lute, the vihuela
was the 15th-century bridge between the the Arabic oud and the modern six-string Spanish guitar. The rich fusion
of cross-cultural influences from Iberia, North Africa, Jewish and Gypsy cultures that produced flamenco in the
18th century were built on it, and variations on this much loved music continue to grow and develop today.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we explore this world with another journey in the Spanish-Moorish
soundscape called VIHUELA.

INTRO : The "archaic revival" movement rediscovers forgotten archetypes from our collective past. As MICKEY HART
explained in his book "Drumming at the Edge of Magic," when we look back to the deepest origins of music, we rediscover
the flute, the rattle, and the drum.
ceremony. At the end of the 20th century, the traditional genre was transformed when new instruments were added
and the cedar flute was popularized by Native musicians like CARLOS NAKAI. Along with non-native and ambient musicians,
they opened up the tradition and expanded the sound to the scale of the western landscape.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we track the gene-splicing of Native American music with ambient electronics
and the American landcape, on a program called FLUTE RATTLE DRUM...SPACE.

INTRO : Chamber music is an indoor art by definition. Yet nothing underscores the complex colors of the
autumn landscape like the sound of a chamber group, especially when it includes the plaintive tones of the
cello, the oboe, or the acoustic guitar. In the fading light, the shadows grow longer, the days grow shorter,
and the sounds of the season grow darker. The natural world contracts...and prepares for the long winter's sleep.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we echo the season with a chamber-electronic journey for fall
called AN AUTUMN GARDEN.

INTRO : At the end of October we celebrate Halloween, the lingering expression of the Celtic pagan festival
that marked the final extinction of summer. It's a time when the dead were said to revisit the mortal world,
and large communal bonfires were lit to ward off the dark spirits. Today it's devolved into a commercial event
destructive presence.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we wander in the gloomy underworlds, ghostly chambers and
haunted caverns, on a program called...BLACKWATER.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 2-Nov-2007

INTRO : The panorama of musical vocalization stretches across cultural time and space, from simple songs
and chants to the most elaborate art music for chorus and orchestra. It's a medium that continues to evolve,
incorporating the past while it forges into the future.
The origins of the Central Asian tradition of harmonic chanting or "overtone" singing are lost in time, but are alive today, both in source cultures like Tuva and Tibet, and in the work of experimental singers and composers.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a journey into the ghostly, floating world of harmonic singing
called SPECTRAL VOICES.

INTRO : Composer HAROLD BUDD really started something back in 1980 when he released THE PLATEAUX OF
MIRROR, the second album in BRIAN ENO's seminal Ambient Music series. The chiming tones of Budd's floating
electric piano, combined with Eno's studio atmospheres, created what have been called "enchanted landscapes
and underwater domains."
It's a sound that's still influential and popular today: accessible and enjoyable...while it quietly insinuates itself into
the deepest reaches of your psyche.

INTRO : The life of a political slogan is rarely glorious and always brief. Bush the Elder had a memorable one in 1988
which lingered past its natural lifespan as a weapon of satire: "a thousand points of light." Despite the history, it's a
lovely image that comes alive as we enter the holiday season and light becomes a symbol of joy and generosity of spirit.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we sound the season with a turn-of-winter journey called POINTS OF LIGHT.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 7-Dec-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Each year in December, we gather to sing sacred hymns and songs. For over a millennium,
the holiday season in Christian cultures has been associated with the sublime, ethereal high voices of
female sopranos, male sopranos or countertenors, and boys choirs. In the massed voices, we hear
an image of unity and peace; in the heavenly harmonies, we hear the sound of angels, magically brought to earth.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a holiday celebration of choral singing called VOICES IN THE NIGHT.

PGM NOTE : contemplative hymns and prayers for the holiday season
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 14-Dec-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The Greek word hymnos means a "song of praise," prayer or adoration, normally to a god or religious figure.
The roots of the word go back to the Hittites over six thousand years ago and mean "to sing." There were hymns
in ancient Egypt and India; in the west, the Homeric hymns, praising the gods of Greek mythology, date from the
7th century B.C.
Praise is affirmative, so hymns are naturally positive experiences. Whether stirring and intense, or quiet and
contemplative, the effect is to lift the spirit. It's a feeling that's abundant during the end of the year holiday season,
a time when (against all odds) the human family renews its commitment to generosity, goodwill and peace.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a selection of quietly joyous hymns and instrumental prayers called HYMNOS.

PGM NOTE : winter treasures from the sacred choral repertoire
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 21-Dec-2007
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The legacy of choral singing is never more cherished than during the holiday season, when it brings warmth
and light to the winter darkness by opening the heart and feeding the soul. From the Christian churches and cathedrals
of Europe and the U.S., to the Orthodox churches of Russia, central Asia, and the Holy Land, the human family gathers
to listen, sing, and worship together.
After more than ten centuries of evolution, some of the finest choral music has been written in the last 100 years
by a special breed of contemporary composers, who respect and extend the tradition.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, another compilation of sublime choral pieces from our longtime guest
producer ELLEN HOLMES called TO THEE WE SING.
