PGM 753 : "AURORA"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a winter journey in the polar regions
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 13-Jan-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : At the very heart of winter, icy sounds reverberate across a suspended
landscape; the glowing curtains of the Northern lights dazzle the stoic
residents of the polar regions, as ions from storms on the sun blow through
the earth's magnetosphere. It's an elemental lightshow from the beginning of
time.

PGM 754 : "SUMMONING THE MUSE"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a tribute to the music of Dead Can Dance
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 20-Jan-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The Anglo/Irish/Australian band DEAD CAN DANCE hit an uncommonly rich
musical vein as they evolved. Starting as a gloomy "darkwave" rock band in
Australia in 1981, they moved to London and soon embraced ancient, modal,
medieval, and world music influences. Like all true artists, they transformed
these into something much more than the sum of its parts. Fronted by LISA
GERRARD's incomparable wordless vocals and BRENDAN PERRY's superb production,
they created a deep and beautiful sound that's been tremendously influential
for artists from Classical to Gothic, New Age to Dark Ambient.
In 2005, Projekt Records released a multi-artist tribute to DEAD CAN DANCE
that's the inspiration for this edition of HEARTS of SPACE. We celebrate the
legacy of DEAD CAN DANCE on a program called SUMMONING THE MUSE.

FIRST BROADCAST : 3-Feb-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The yearning, glacial sound of Norwegian musician JAN GARBAREK's tenor
saxophone. It's traveled far and wide from his home base at the Arctic edge of
Europe. He was the very first artist on the indispensable ECM label. In fact,
it's hard to imagine ECM without Norway; many of the musicians are based
there, and Oslo is ground zero for Rainbow Studios, home of the crystalline,
passionate ECM sound.

PGM 756 : "PIANOSCAPES 3"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : piano, personal and contemplative
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 10-Feb-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : In its three hundred year history, the piano has grown both larger and
smaller, gone electric and then electronic, and been the anchor and reference
point for a sizeable fraction of Western music. Through it all, the range,
versatility, rhythmic clarity and melodic appeal of the instrument has kept it
at the forefront of music from pop, to jazz, to classical.
For a few rare artists, the piano can be magically transformed into a personal
transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we listen for that personal touch, on a
contemplative journey called PIANOSCAPES 3.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 17-Feb-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Electronic music has been evolving for the better part of a century
now. The novelty has come and gone, and in recent years, electronics have
found their way into dozens of genres. But there's one place where it really
feels like home: electronic spacemusic.
Whether cruising across distant starfields, drifting through clouds of
interstellar dust, or just floating peacefully in the good ole cosmic soup,
spacemusic takes us to a galaxy far, far away. That may be escapism, but hey,
we like it. We might even need it. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we
harvest a nice crop of melodic/chordal spacemusic on a program called
ELECTROSPHERE.

PGM NOTE : the cosmic twang of infinite guitars
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 3-Mar-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Back in 1990, we did a program called "Mostly Infinite Guitars"
celebrating MICHAEL BROOK's effort to dematerialize the electric guitar. The
title was kind of cute, and we found more music, so three years later we
followed it up with an even cuter one called "More Infinite Guitars."
Fast forward to 2006. Other guitar shows have come and gone, and once again we
have lots of great material for a new show. We could call it "Still More
Infinite Guitars," but you know, we didn't really start this series properly.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a retro-future-ambient-guitar journey
called just plain "INFINITE GUITARS."

PGM NOTE : exploring the world of ambient film music
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 17-Mar-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Here's the thing about soundtrack albums: no matter how good the music
in the film is, you just never know how good the CD will be. Some of the best
composers and studio musicians in the world work on these projects. No expense
is spared to record the music and mix it into the film. Then, the soundtrack
CD is thrown together in a few days from dozens of short "cues," padded with
"incidental music" or songs from hot young bands, and rushed to market in time
for the film's opening. As listening experiences go, they're totally
unpredictable: you just never know.
Yet the original function of film music has a lot in common with ambient and
action on the screen, just like ambient does to the action in your room.

INTRO : Waiting out the seemingly endless period between winter and spring can
be a challenge. While our psyches are reaching for release from the
constricting grip of winter, our rational minds must practice patience and
equanimity. Ambient music can help us expand and float across this transition
on electronic waves. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, an
intra-seasonal electronic journey called INVERSION.

PGM NOTE : a MARK HOLLIS Retrospective
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 7-Apr-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The story of English singer/songwriter MARK HOLLIS is an inspiration
muse' to a place of true creativity.
Born in London in 1955, Hollis came of age in the 1970s and embarked on the
mythic road to fame and fortune by starting a rock band. After a few false
starts it worked, and the group TALK TALK began a short, brilliant pop music
career that included several gold records in England and Europe in the 1980s.
But Mark Hollis' artistic yearnings pulled him off the beaten track and into a
ambient and chamber music, yet sounding unlike anyone else, before or since.
The two final TALK TALK albums, SPIRIT OF EDEN from 1988 and LAUGHING STOCK
from 1991, plus a 1998 solo album titled simply MARK HOLLIS, are all quiet
masterpieces and timeless works of art, graced by profoundly poetic lyrics and
vocals from powerfully emotional...to evanescent.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 14-Apr-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Every year at Easter, we take the opportunity to catch up on the
finest sounds in sacred choral music. There's something mysterious and
majestic in the sound of voices in harmony. As often in the past, we turned to
guest producer ELLEN HOLMES of Adagio Recordings, who brought us a bouquet of
sublime pieces from the repertoire.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, our common theme is QUIET PRAYERS.
It comes from many countries and spans several centuries: from medieval hymns
to 21st century art songs.

English music. And why not? England remains a breeding ground and innovator
for all kinds of new genres. This time...a report from the intersection of
melodies float over ambient soundscapes.
English musician and producer BRIAN ENO, who more or less invented the term
"ambient," once observed that certain kinds of electronic music could be heard
as "fast music with slow underpinnings...or slow music with fast
ornamentation." However YOU hear it, on this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE,
a downtempo journey called DEEP GROOVE. 'Groove' because it moves with a
hypnotic rhythm; 'Deep' because it takes you somewhere worth going.

PGM NOTE : Indian music : slow, sensual, reverent
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 14-Jul-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The Anjali mudra, with hands held together at the heart, is a
gesture of reverence, benediction and salutation, a perfect symbol of
the devotional spirit at the heart of Indian music. The drone, the
steady tonk-a-tonk rhythm of the electronic tabla, the familiar twang
of the sitar, the curvilinear ornaments of the voice, plus electronic
traditions of Indian music into the 21st century.
This example comes from Holland, but it might have come from almost
anywhere. With its high musical skill, seductive sensuality and
devotional character, Indian music generates intense loyalty and finds
receptive listeners all over the world.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, another journey in the
contemporary Indian soundscape called ANJALI.

with an extraordinary set of influences dating back to the 8th century, when the Moors of North Africa conquered Andalusia
and set in motion the rich combination of Arabic, Moorish, Jewish, Gypsy and Spanish elements that emerged
in the late 18th century as flamenco. Every two years in September, the aficionados of flamenco gather in the south of Spain
for a month-long festival of music, song and dance. This is a culture that comes with a lifestyle attached; and that means
late nights with lots of great music, food, wine, and way too much tobacco. Flamenco is unapologetically excessive
in its pursuit of passion.

PGM NOTE : a techno-tribal excursion
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 11-Aug-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Back in 1988, STEVE ROACH followed his intuition into a breakthrough that launched a whole new sub-genre
of electronic music. Searching for something less technical and more profound, he took a trip to the Australian outback,
where he encountered the primordial artifacts of a 40,000 year old Aboriginal culture. The result was the classic album
and ambient atmospherics. Today we call it techno-tribal.
It's worth pondering just what kind of nerve he struck. Techno-tribal music took a big step toward humanizing and deepening
electronic music, expanding its rhythmic palette, and reconnecting it to a much older tradition of psychoactive sound.
And when we open ourselves to the music of so-called "primitive" cultures, we not only gain that experience,
but a greater sense of perspective on our own culture.

INTRO : High on the list of the most significant inventions of the 20th century, you might be surprised to find
LEO FENDER'S solid body electric guitar, which created or revolutionized almost every genre of popular music.
Not only was Fender an electronics and design genius, he also had a talent for naming his creations;
first came the TELECASTER and the PRECISION BASS in 1951, and then in 1954, the guitar that changed
the musical world forever: the STRATOCASTER.
an electronic instrument you can fly. No one could have predicted the evolution of synthesizers and electronic
spacemusic at that point...but Leo Fender implied it, in a single word.

it has a complex history. It was controlled feedback that elevated the electric guitar to the realm of the gods in the 1960s
and fueled the rock revolution immortalized by JIMI HENDRIX and satirized in SPINAL TAP. [OK, things got a little out of hand...]
In the electronic music era, feedback expanded to arrays of mirrors to enrich tone, sustain notes, create rhythms,
and imply space through echoes. Today we harness tens of thousands of echoes to create spatial illusions with digital reverb.
It's all done with sophisticated feedback.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we follow the feedback with another journey in electronic space
called HALL OF MIRRORS.

PGM NOTE : Janis Mattox' sublime song cycle of loss and remembrance
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 8-Sep-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : We normally think of Brazil as an extroverted country that celebrates life's sensual pleasures,
but there's also an introverted, contemplative side of Brazilian culture, beautifully expressed in the life and work
of the poet CECELIA MEIRELES, who died in 1964.
In the poem SOLOMBRA or "Sunshadow," she created an intimate conversation between herself and the spirit
of her beloved husband, whose bouts with depression led him to suicide. The poem is a "sorrow-song" of grief,
loss, detachment, and remembrance. "Life goes away," she writes, "but the song remains."
Northern California composer JANIS MATTOX has taken Cecelia Meireles' poems as the text for an elegant
7 movement song cycle for soprano, violin, cello, and piano. It was recorded in an intensely lyrical live performance
in 2005, featuring Bolivian soprano KATIA ESCALERA. The entire piece is written in the natural harmonic intervals
of "just intonation," using a specially tuned and electronically enhanced piano created by the Good Sound Foundation.
In over 20 years of Hearts of Space, we've only found a handful of pieces we felt deserved a program all to themselves.
This is one of them. SOLOMBRA: the moving words of CECELIA MEIRELES, sung in Portuguese, the sublime music
of composer JANIS MATTOX...on this edition of HEARTS OF SPACE.

INTRO : In the endlessly adaptable world of the piano, music can be dense or transparent, active or still, harmonic or dissonant,
improvised or composed. So for the player, the piano offers a virtually unlimited medium for artistic choice.
For the listener, the choices are much simpler: Does the music move us? Is it what we want to hear?
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, the sublime, coherent world of the contemplative piano, on a program called IVORY, BLACK AND GOLD.

INTRO : Despite frequent claims to the contrary, in show business very few people have created something really new.
GUY LALIBERTE, founder of CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, is one of them. With original partner DANIEL GAUTHIER
and a small group of street performers, Laliberte created Cirque du Soleil in Montreal in 1984. Today, with over a dozen
touring and resident productions, including five in Las Vegas, Cirque du Soleil has become a kind of benign entertainment
empire, and Laliberte is one of the richest men in Canada.
Cirque du Soleil modernized and extended the circus tradition by eliminating animals, creating narrative storylines, and adding elements
of street performance, opera, ballet, rock and theater, plus wildly creative costumes, dazzling stagecraft, and live original music.

PGM NOTE : an emotional landscape for autumn
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FIRST BROADCAST : 20-Oct-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The word nostalgia originated in the 17th century as a medical term for an illness caused by an intense desire
to return to one's native land. In time, it came to describe any strong emotion driven by memory and desire for something
in the imagined past. "Nostalgia" writes LINDA HUTCHEON, "exiles us from the present as it brings the imagined past near."
Nostalgia can be joyful, but more often it's marked by subdued melancholy and longing -- of losing oneself in a world
of memory and idealized projection. It has become a psychological condition, an antidote to ironic detachment --
incurable, because time moves inexorably forward. In the modern world, the mythic journey, with its themes of departure,
farewell, exile, wandering, trial, and return...evokes a powerful nostalgia, while the nostalgia for simplicity, certainty and security
...takes on a special appeal.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we explore the emotional landscape of autumn with music for cello, piano, orchestra and voices.

INTRO : CEDAR is a species of evergreen with a spicy, fragrant, resinous wood; it's famously a natural moth repellent,
used in closets. Soft and splintery yet strong, it also makes excellent flutes with a warm, almost buttery tone.
These instruments have been played by Native Americans for thousands of years. It's a sound we like to return to in the fall:
wistful, tinged with sadness, earthy and timeless.
In Indian cultures, the native flute played several roles, from courtship to prayer ceremonies. Around a thousand years ago,
created the "plains style" flute. Today they're played in traditional ways and used for creative explorations by native and ambient musicians.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a journey in the native flute soundscape called CEDAR SHADOWS.

In China and the Americas, smoke was used to send signals across the landscape for centuries. For most of human history,
smoke was part of everyday life, but with environmental and health concerns, it looks like we won't be seeing as much of it
Luckily, ambient music can make up for the atmosphere. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a program of dark,

Like most musical trends, it left a core of passionate fans, a larger group of casual listeners, and the majority unaware of its charms.
At the end of the 16th century, the Camerata of Florence revolutionized music by turning away from polyphony and returning to an older style.
the attempt to reproduce the original sound and playing style of the time on period instruments. Today, that's giving way
to a freer, more creative practice: aware and respectful of the original, but open to improvisation, extension, and new discoveries.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we focus on some of those new discoveries in early music (from the ECM label)
on a program called CAMERATA NOVA.

PGM 789 : "CANTORUM"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : hymns and sacred spaces for chorus

FIRST BROADCAST : 22-Dec-2006
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : "When in doubt, write a hymn," was the formula for success of English pop star ELTON JOHN.
A rather large number of composers have done just that, though I suspect they weren't in doubt:
music for massed voices has moved and inspired listeners since the beginning of human history.
I'm STEPHEN HILL and on this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a collection of hymns and sacred spaces
for chorus on a program called CANTORUM.
