PGM 684 : "GLACIER BAY"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : an electronic journey to the heart of winter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 1-09-04
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: Cold, clear and quiet, we drift through frozen lakes
and glacial terrain on a journey to the heart of winter. It's
a sound of tiny movements locked within great static masses,
deep drones and crystalline accents, punctuated by the
reverberation of great natural events.

PGM NOTE : a celebration of the harp
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 1-23-04
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The HARP. For over 4000 years, it's brought the
human family a little bit of heaven on earth. From its
beginnings in Mesopotamia, it spread across the ancient world
to Asia, Egypt, Greece, and Africa.
In Medieval times, it was used for sacred and secular music,
and to comfort the dying. As the instrument of the bards and
troubadors, it played a key role in the evolution of folk music.
In the 19th century, the pedal harp matured into a concert
instrument and took its place in the orchestra.
And in the 20th century, of course, it went electric -- even
laser! Whether wirestrung, cross-strung, single, double, or
triple strung, pedal or electric, folk or classical -- there
are harps for every purpose.

PGM NOTE : 'extraordinary transcendence' from Lisa Gerrard
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 1-30-04
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: If any singer has created music that lives up to
the term "ineffable" in this era, it's the Australian diva
LISA GERRARD.
From her start in the early 1980s as half of the ground-
breaking duo DEAD CAN DANCE, she's pursued a singular artistic
path -- first, stretching the band format with elements of
Celtic, Medieval, and World music; then evolving into a unique
solo artist and collaborator with stunning albums like
THE MIRROR POOL and DUALITY; and finally, into a career
scoring major films, including HEAT, GLADIATOR, THE INSIDER,
BLACK HAWK DOWN, and WHALERIDER.
Her signature sound -- a wordless vocalise set into an
emotionally charged architectural atmosphere -- can be haunting,
compassionate, elegiac or exalted, filled with dark intensity
or hymn-like purity -- but always stirs the soul.
2004 marks the release of her first studio album in 6 years,
a collaboration with Irish classical composer PATRICK CASSIDY
called IMMORTAL MEMORY.

INTRO: Ever since science & technology allowed us to control
a bit of the physical world, we've tried to stretch the
boundaries of the possible. Science fiction opened up the
imagination, and moved the limit well beyond the sky.
One enduring fantasy is "time travel" -- the ability to move
between past, present, and future. Electronic music lets us
play with our sense of time in an endless universe of sounds
that move and fly.

INTRO: BELLS have been with us for a long time -- at least since
Egypt, over 4000 years ago. There were bells in ancient Iran,
Assyria, China and Korea, as well.
But it was Christian and Buddhist monks who took the time to
perfect bell making, beginning around the time of St. Patrick
in the 5th century AD, and continuing in Europe, Russia and Tibet
in the 17th and 18th centuries.
In the 20th century, technology brought science to the art of
bell-making, and today we can design our bells by computer and
even build them electronically.

INTRO: It's said, the darkest hour is just before the dawn.
In unsettled times, the metaphorical dawn is always ahead,
and darkness seems endless.
The same feeling pervades the seasonal transition from
winter into spring. It's a time of waiting -- for the end
of wintry darkness and the dawn of the brilliant light
of spring.
Many ambient musicians have been drawn to these metaphors
as they navigate dark electronic soundworlds, and bring us
reports on their travels.

INTRO: With eerie clarity, John Surman's soprano saxophone
rings out across a chilled, silent soundscape. It could be

The very ambiguity of the space of this music is part of
its power. Judging by recent NASA photos and a little
imagination, it could even be a sound heard on Mars.

PGM NOTE : a celebration of the ethereal Celtic ballad
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: According to Thane Tierney, "the twilight realm is the
magical time between day and dark, the bridge between the worlds
of our inhabitation and our imagination." It's a fitting metaphor
for the yearly celebration of St. Patrick's Day, coming as it
does just before the spring equinox -- the ancient bridge
between the seasons.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we return to our
long-time affection for the ethereal Celtic ballad, and the
magical 'otherworld' of faeries, sprites, dyads and selkies,
on a visit to THE TWILIGHT REALM.

PGM 693 : "BAROQUE VOICES"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : 17th & 18th century sacred classics for Easter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 4-09-04
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The Christian celebration of Easter and the Jewish
celebration of Passover were built upon ancient Pagan celebrations
of rebirth and renewal around the Spring Equinox. As such, they
connect to a tradition of re-affirmation of hope for a better
world to come -- a sentiment that never loses its relevance.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, another of our
occasional special programs by guest producer ELLEN HOLMES.
Ellen's mission is to find the contemplative gems scattered
throughout the vast classical music repertoire, and bring them
together into programs that are sheer poetry. This time, she
focuses on the 17th and 18th centuries, with a program called
BAROQUE VOICES.

PGM 694 : "THE SILK ROAD"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : a Central Asian journey to the past and the future
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 4-16-04
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: For over a thousand years, the legendary Silk Road was
the Internet of its day. From 400 BC to 1400 AD, it stretched
5000 miles from Asia to Europe, criss-crossing the heart of the
ancient world and bringing trade, knowledge and culture from
China, Korea, Japan and India/ through the deserts and mountains
of Central Asia, Persia, the Middle East and Turkey/ to the
Mediterranean doorways of Europe. Not just silk...but goods
of all kinds travelled these roads, and with them came science,
technology, art and music.
Today, while ethnic and religious conflict sadly burden a
region that has made enormous contributions to world culture,
cross-cultural musicians aim to create meetings, rather than
fusions; conversations between old knowledge and new -- between
music that is cosmopolitan, and music rooted in a deep sense of
place and tradition.

INTRO: You know, the old "East meets West" theory is starting
to show its age. These days, North, East, South and West all
meet each other every day at the speed of light. So where does
that leave 30 centuries of Indian music?
Today, we find Indian classical music more influential than
ever -- in the words of DAVID TOOP, "both celebrated and
notorious as a source of inspiration for European and American
musicians and composers" -- while breeding a new generation of
adventurous young Indian and Pakistani musicians happily
exploring Western pop, jazz, electronica -- even rap.

INTRO: It's hard to convey how revolutionary this music sounded
when it was released in 1980 -- the product of maverick avant-
garde trumpeter JON HASSELL. (Yes, that unearthly lead instrument
is a trumpet, alchemically transformed beyond recognition by
HASSELL and producer BRIAN ENO.)
The album kicked off a projected series called "Fourth World"
music -- a fusion of Third World ethnic sources and sophisticated
electronics. HASSELL pronounced the genre "classical by structure,
popular by textural appeal, global-minded." On this transmission
of HEARTS of SPACE, we track the evolution of the Fourth-World
vision to a new generation, on a program called POSSIBLE MUSICS.

INTRO: Repetition. Is it a formula for boredom? Or, a doorway to
something deeper, more subtle, more powerful? For centuries,
repetition has been a key element in the musical toolbox, a means
of leading the mind and body into secret and ecstatic places.
With the arrival of synthesizers in the 1970s, repetition
became effortless -- and more challenging. How to avoid monotony
and regain the human touch? The best electronic musicians studied
the sophisticated 'rhythm cycles' of Indian music, or introduced
the chance strategies of JOHN CAGE and the Taoist masters, who
teach us that nothing is really ever the same twice.

INTRO: It only takes a few notes in this minor scale to transport
you to North Africa. It's a sound associated with Hollywood exotica
from the classic movie era, from Douglas Fairbanks to Lawrence of
Arabia. These days, the associations are a lot more complicated,
but the music is better than ever.
Memorably described by poet HAKIM BEY as "romantic transcultural
exile music of the Middle East" -- both expatriate and sympathetic
western musicians have been pulled into its orbit by the force of
the tradition and the emotional power of its expression.

INTRO: Back in 1959, the legendary jazz trumpeter MILES DAVIS
and his equally legendary sextet -- CANNONBALL ADDERLY and JOHN
COLTRANE on saxophones, BILL EVANS on piano, PAUL CHAMBERS bass,
and JIMMY COBB drums -- recorded what's become the most influential
and biggest selling jazz album of all time: KIND OF BLUE.
Blue was the concept, the mood, the feeling: slow, longing,
lines suspended in space, with a double helping of Miles'
matchless sense of economy and restraint, and subtle use of the
Harmon mute. The sound of this album has become a jazz touchstone.
We take our theme from one of the classic jazz standards from
those sessions: BLUE IN GREEN.

PGM NOTE : the 70s roots of German electronic spacemusic

INTRO: This week we celebrate another milestone in the HEARTS
of SPACE series with Program Number 700. Since we began national
syndication in 1983, we've used these centenary programs for
special features and documentaries about space and contemplative
music. On program 600, we told the story of "how space met rock"
in England in the 1970s. This time, we look at the rise of
electronic music in Germany during the same period.
It began, as it generally does, with young men dreaming of a
career in popular music. Combine this with the German genius for
technology and you have the makings of something new. And that's
what happened in 1967 when an electric guitarist named EDGAR
FROESE founded one of the seminal bands in the German story, a
group that would later create a new kind of electronic music,
and was allegedly named after a then-popular brand of LSD:
TANGERINE DREAM.
They emerged from the raucous experimental Berlin rock scene
into something deeper, more creative, and more unfamiliar -- a
drifting, improvised, space-creating sound, heavily dependent on
electronics. From 30 years' perspective, we can see this as a
particularly 20th century form of contemplative, ambient sound.
But at the time, it sounded original and totally revolutionary.
As most bands do, the original TANGERINE DREAM broke up
quickly, but early members including drummer KLAUS SCHULZE and
experimentalist CONRAD SCHNITZLER, went on to successful solo
careers. EDGAR FROESE, CHRISTOPHER FRANKE and PETER BAUMANN
carried on the group -- the beginning of many incarnations,
including the current one with EDGAR FROESE's son!
KLAUS SCHULZE figured he could play synthesizers as well as
drums, and in 1972 began an astonishingly productive career that
continues to this day with solo and collaborative appearances on
almost 700 recordings!
TANGERINE DREAM signed with a major label, and -- along with
KRAFTWERK, who created witty electronic dance music that was a
progenitor of Disco and Techno -- became a major touring group,
with multi-media concerts to rival PINK FLOYD...as well as
popular film music composers.
Other German musicians took the new possibilities of electronic
sound in their own directions -- from pop to classical. The full
story is far too complex to cover here. It includes:
* the "Berlin School" -- mainly rhythm-based synthesizer music
from TANGERINE DREAM, KLAUS SCHULZE, ASHRA, MICHAEL HOENIG
and many others;
* the Munich group -- acoustic as well as electronic, and more
spiritually oriented, with world music elements -- including
POPOL VUH, EBERHARD SCHOENER, PETER MICHAEL HAMEL & BETWEEN,
and DEUTER;
* Experimental and proto-industrial composers, like KLUSTER,
FAUST, and CONRAD SCHNITZLER;
* Progressive rock groups like ELOY, JANE, GURU-GURU, CAN,
and AMON DUUL;
* and an arty mix of rock & minimalist elements by CLUSTER,
NEU, and HARMONIA.
For a complete survey, see MARK PRENDERGAST'S excellent book,
THE AMBIENT CENTURY. [Info: www.ambientcentury.co.uk]

INTRO: "In all the ancient civilizations, the notion of time was
cyclical, rather than linear," says DEEPAK RAJA. "For the Hindu
mind, a sensitivity to daily and annual cycles is part of
accepting the ultimate cycle -- of birth, death, and rebirth."
Fast forward to the present, where we measure the time cycles
of computer chips in billionths of a second. When we bring these
two worlds together in music -- one ancient and aligned with
nature; the other, contemporary and aligned with technology --
we get a timeless, yet thoroughly modern sound.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: This summer all eyes are on Greece for the 2004 Olympic
Games in Athens. No doubt you'll be hearing a lot of heroic music
like this/ by Greek soundtrack composer VANGELIS. But the story
of Greece and its music is more about its position as an enduring
cultural crossroads -- an intersection of traditions, religions,
cultures, and musics.
Under the brilliant Greek sun, the monophonic modal music of
the East met the polyphonic folk music of the Mediterranean. The
joyful rhythms of the dance encountered the age-old heartache of
the lament...and word, music, and movement merged in the song.

INTRO: Think BRAZIL and the first things that come to mind are
the hot rhythms of samba or the cool syncopations of bossa nova.
These popular styles have influenced the world, but Brazil is a
huge country -- a melting pot of Indian, African and European
cultures -- and there are many worlds of music to be found there.
We've played the occasional Brazilian artist over the years,
but it took a Brazilian music lover and HEARTS of SPACE fan
named REUBEN COGO to open up the richness of Brazilian music
to us. On this edition of HEARTS of SPACE, we bring you the
result, on a program called SAUDADE.
"Saudade" is a unique Portuguese word that can't be easily
translated, a blend of nostalgia, yearning, longing, sadness
and fondness -- a feeling that expresses the essence of
Brazilian soul.

INTRO: TIME. We watch it, measure it, charge for it and, if we
have too much, we even try to kill it. But in the end, it's a
mystery. For centuries, musicians have played with time,
discovering that time is related to motion and rhythm -- that
time is fluid, a perception that can be modified, if you
know how. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we try to
unlock the secrets of relative motion.

PGM 708 : "A WINDOW TO THE EAST"
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
PGM NOTE : East-West music of Gurdjieff-DeHartmann et al
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 9-24-04
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: Today we take for granted the idea that the world is full
of diverse and meaningful music. We even have a genre category
for it: World Music. But this awareness was a long time in coming
to the Eurocentric musical world. Among the first to promote this
perspective was the Greek-Armenian mystic, teacher and philosopher
GEORGES IVANOVICH GURDJIEFF.
Gurdjieff held that the self-expression of much Western art
was shallow, whereas ancient art had what he called an "objective"
character/ that preserved and transmitted deeper knowledge.
Beginning in the early 1900's, he travelled widely throughout
the former Ottoman Empire, from Europe through Central Asia
as far east as Afghanistan and Tibet, on a spiritual quest
that's been immortalized in the book and movie "MEETINGS WITH
REMARKABLE MEN." Along the way, he absorbed the music and the
emotional essence of these cultures.
When he settled in Paris in the 1920s to teach, he met the
Ukrainian composer/pianist THOMAS DE HARTMANN, who became his
student. Well before the era of Ethnographic field recordings,
they began a collaboration that resulted in more than 300
compositions/ based on the folk music, peasant dances, sacred
and ritual music and chants of Central Asia and the East.
Gurdjieff provided the rhythms and the melodies; De Hartmann
fashioned these elements into completed pieces for piano. This
music joins Western and Eastern sensibilities in a new way.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, [we'll hear] the
Gurdjieff-De Hartmann music performed by pianists CECIL LYTLE
and ALAIN KREMSKI, the complementary music of Armenian-American
composer ALAN HOVHANESS (performed by SAHAN ARZRUNI), and a
wonderful new ECM recording by German cellist ANJA LECHNER
and Greek pianist VASSILIS TSABROPOULOS called "Chants, Hymns
and Dances."

INTRO: We're rolling over the canyonlands of the southwest,
a tawny spectacle of river and mesa, sky and rock, light and
space, shadow and time -- haunted by ghostly ancestors.
Long ago, this environment conjured up our own form of
"world music," inspired by reverence for the land and played
on simple, indigenous instruments: the flute, the rattle, the drum.

INTRO: Terror -- a word we're hearing WAY too much of these days.
It's terrible when real, but since the 1920s, when psychological
terror made the leap from the novel to silent film, horror has
been the genre of choice for vicarious fans of the macabre, the
ominous, the morbid, the diabolical.
These are the darkly poetic images associated with the often
painful days of Scorpio. It's a taste that's both aesthetic and
cathartic: a willful immersion in our ancient limbic emotions of
danger and fear...and a defiant exercise of our impulse for
self-preservation.

the ECM label takes on an eerie resonance. For 35 years, German
producer MANFRED EICHER has assembled the finest musicians in
Europe and recorded them with pristine clarity, creating a
catalog of almost 900 albums of extraordinary quality, ranging
across jazz, classical and contemplative music. On this edition
of HEARTS of SPACE, we explore the complex tones of recent and

INTRO: Subtle and deep -- the sound of VAS opens up the
multi-cultural world of contemplative vocals. If you're looking
for instrumental background music, this isn't going to be your
show, but if you resonate to the timeless, heartfelt sound of
the female voice, you'll be a step closer to heaven.
The ancient Greek word _mousa_ or muse represents the forces
of intuition, inspiration and creativity, and the power of
communication through word, song, art, dance, and music. Indeed,
it's the root of the word 'music.'
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we honor those
forces with a journey called INVOKING THE MUSE.

INTRO: December arrives on a carpet of clear, chilled air,
with the promise of sparkling lights and crystalline bells.
Ever since GEORGE WINSTON's 1983 tribute to the winter season
called "December," the title has been associated with music for
solo piano. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we find
the keys to winter with music for piano and electronic keyboards
on a program called DECEMBER.

PGM NOTE : Celtic-inspired acoustic music for winter
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-10-04
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The best defense against the cold and hard weather of
the winter season is music that's filled with warmth and human
emotion. Acoustic music from the Celtic tradition, with its
lovely melodies and skillful performances is the perfect thing,
conjuring impressions of fragrant peat fires and the ageless
satisfactions of hearth and home.

PGM NOTE : Choral music for the winter holiday season
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
FEED DATE : 12-24-04
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: Every year during the holiday season, something deep
in the human spirit reaches out through all the chaos and
imperfection of our world, in search of images of a more
perfect place. In the massed voices of the sacred choral
repertoire we find...an image of heaven...a world of harmony
...an echo of infinity.
