SAUSALITO WEATHER : Forebearing
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : As we pass through the white and silent heart of winter,
time seems suspended...quiescent. The cold air is saturated
with suspended moisture, like a cloud come down to earth.
Deep in the ground, the potential of spring lies coiled,
waiting to be born. For plants and animals alike,
it's a time of forbearance and waiting...

SAUSALITO WEATHER : cherry, plum, magnolia
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : You'd be hard pressed to find a soundworld more alien
to Western ears than the ceremonial music of Tibet. Encompassing
the entire spectrum from sepulchral horns to crystalline bells,
accompanied by endless guttural chants, overtone drones and
massive percussion ensembles, it sounds like a form of creative
chaos that would frighten small children and chase away demons.
But on the other side of chaos lies peace -- and therein...
lies its magic.

SAUSALITO WEATHER : Sprung
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : George Harrison put words to the feeling when he wrote
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps." But he was only updating a
tradition: the sound of melancholy is a very old thing in music.
It's been traced back to Aristotle, became a fashion during the
Renaissance and continues to evolve today. And why not? In a
world filled with irrational, often terrifying forces, the culture
of fear and melancholy are linked. Embracing the sad, the dark,
and the haunted is somehow therapeutic -- and makes reality a
little easier to bear.

north tend to express themselves with fewer words."

SAUSALITO WEATHER : dewplicitous
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : The buttery smooth sound of the Irish "low whistle."
Considering we're coming up on the Spring Equinox, I'll bet
you've already got an idea where we're headed this week. Yes,
rain or shine, war or peace, it's the season of rebirth and time
again for our yearly celebration of the slow, deep side of Celtic
music -- the timeless Celtic ballad. Quiet but o-so-powerful,
it captures the reflective emotions: love, sadness, nostalgia
and peace.

SAUSALITO WEATHER : Peaceless
=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO : Sad to say, our transition into spring 2003 has been
anything but normal. Strange weather, economic uncertainty at
home, disheartening international conflicts. "Life," to use the
old Indian word KOYANNISQAATSI, seems "out of balance." On this
transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we exorcise some of those
conflicting feelings with an unsettled but hopefully rewarding
program called DISTURBANCE.

INTRO : When the scorecard for musical talent in the world is
added up, the tiny country of Norway will amaze everyone by
coming out near the top. The gods of music seem to have a
special affection for this far-north land of four and a half
million at the northwestern edge of Europe -- about the
population of Houston.
Among the leading musicians working in Norway today is
TERJE RYPDAL. To the rest of the world, he's known as a
guitarist, improviser and sonic experimenter, a jazz musician
with a more than passing affection for yearning, passionate,
rock-influenced electric guitar.
In Norway, however, he's known as a serious composer, with
over 60 works in his catalog, including five symphonies, two
operas, a piano concerto, string and woodwind quintets, and
numerous orchestral pieces.
We've had an extended love affair with Terje Rypdal's music,
dating back to his classic ECM albums from the 1970s. On this
transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we're proud to bring you a
major work by TERJE RYPDAL, a magnificent triple concerto for
orchestra, electric guitar, trumpet, pipe organ, and soprano
called...LUX AETERNA.
LUX AETERNA (from the Latin for 'eternal light') was
inspired by 20th century Hungarian composer GYORGI LIGETI's
famous tone color piece by the same name, popularized by
Stanley Kubrick in the film 2001. Rypdal shares LIGETI's
fascination with the uplifting symbol of eternal light and his
talent for creating extraordinary sounds/ but remains a tonal,
melodic and highly emotional composer, deeply inspired by the
experience of the mountain landscapes near his home.

INTRO : Despite the grim forebodings of George Orwell's famous
novel, in 1984 the world was a less worrisome place. Here in
California that year, the fast-growing Windham Hill label released
the 2nd album by a young acoustic guitarist named MICHAEL HEDGES
called AERIAL BOUNDARIES.
Anything but boring and placid, Hedges combined a restless musical
intelligence with amazingly creative technique. His recordings
excited thousands of guitarists and music fans all over the world.
On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we celebrate the legacy
of the late MICHAEL HEDGES with a program of creative acoustic
and electronic guitar called AERIAL BOUNDARIES.

INTRO : This week we celebrate Easter, the Christian holy day
that's given us some of the most profound and joyful music ever
created for the human voice. Beginning in the 9th century, the
Eastern Christian church in Bulgaria developed the first national
liturgical music in Europe / joining Byzantine church music with
local folk traditions. When this development was interrupted
during the conquest of Bulgaria by the Ottoman Turks, the music
was preserved in isolated monasteries and adapted with glorious
results by the Slavonic orthodox cultures in Russia and Armenia.

INTRO : Santosa is an Indian word meaning "contentment." In
the theory of yoga, it's one of the niyamas or 'virtues of self
observation.' We cultivate santosa to feel gratitude for what
we have, rather than resentment for what we do not.
In music, santosa leads to a gentle, exotic, contemplative
sound, often joining Western electronics with the venerable
traditions of Indian music. And today, it's often made by a new
generation of Western musicians trained by some of the master
Indian teachers.

INTRO : And it has come to pass in the 20th year of our journey,
dear listener, that we arrive at a program with a celebrated, if
not infamous, number: in Biblical terms, program six hundred
threescore and six: number 666.
In the nearly two thousand years since the creation of the
Book of Revelations, a veritable epidemic of apocalyptic fantasies,
millennial predictions, (more recently) techno-paranoia about
bar codes, and a vast range of literal and symbolic interpretations
from well-meaning to strange / have led to countless books, and
now (thanks to Google) over two million web pages dealing with the
number 666 / and interpretations of the words of the scriptures.
What does the Bible actually say? Well, nothing about bar
codes, that's for sure. It refers to the "mark of the beast" and
counsels readers to avoid it. I'm STEPHEN HILL, and on this
edition of HEARTS of SPACE, we follow that advice with a program
of 3rd millennium ambient & electronic music called "REVELATIONS."
And let me be particularly clear on this point: this program has
nothing to do with prophecies Biblical or secular; we just didn't
want a program with such a famous number to pass unacknowledged.

INTRO: Midsummernight -- the shortest night of the year, spells
magic with warmth and energy and nature at its fullest; darkness
has lost its power, light is triumphant. It's a time for special
celebrations. RUTH REICHMANN tells us that the Summer Solstice
was celebrated by the Germanic tribes and their neighbors, the
Slavs and Celts, with huge bonfires -- (please, don't try this in
California) while Druids -- the Celtic priests -- celebrated
the wedding of Heaven and Earth. In "Midsummer Night's Dream,"
Shakespeare brings these traditions and their hidden meanings to
life. It was a night of fire festivals and love magic, oracles
and divination, when spirits and demons were banished. On this
transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we celebrate summer solstice
without the pyrotechnics, on a program called MIDSUMMER NIGHT.

INTRO: Well, with the summer solstice behind us and temperatures
soaring, it's time to reflect on the sound of the season. You see,
it's not just about ball games and barbecues. Summer's the time
we savor the fruits of the land, the extra daylight and the sultry
nights with our 'significant others.' We stretch out, travel,
reconnect with the water and the natural world. And even though
we now know to protect ourselves against the sun, in a very primal
way, in the summer we feed on light itself. On this transmission
of HEARTS of SPACE, we update our long-running summer music series
with a program called SUMMER LIGHT 4.

INTRO: The nostalgic longing of the Middle Eastern flute called
the ney...In an era when much of the Middle East is a political
tinderbox and fundamentalist Islam allows no music at all,
what poet HAKIM BEY calls "a music of exile" is being made by
expatriate Middle Eastern and Western musicians in New York,
Los Angeles, London, Paris, and San Francisco.
These creative fusions of Arabic, North African and electronic
music stand as living examples of cultural tolerance and communi-
cation. Hakim Bey says "this music tends toward a Romanticism
of the Imaginal Orient -- nostalgia for a time and place that is
present/ but unobtainable. A sadness of separation; the beloved
as a distant heartland."

INTRO: What's in a "tribe"? The word returned to popular culture
in the 1960s and has been in and out of fashion ever since. Of
course, in most of the so-called "third world," it's not fashion:
tribal societies are still the day-to-day reality, and musicians
from sophisticated Western countries have been finding inspiration
and vitality in tribal music for hundreds of years. It makes
sense: all of us have roots in tribal culture somewhere.

INTRO: The dark, passionate, noble sound of the flamenco guitar.
It arose out of a unique blend of Spanish, Moorish, Jewish and
Gypsy culture in 15th century Spain. In 1934, Spanish poet
Federico Garcia Lorca tried to define the essence of this sound
and the music that emerged from the blood and soil of Andalusia.
The word he chose to describe it is duende. "Whatever has dark
sound has duende," quoted Lorca, "a mysterious power that every-
one can feel and no philosophy can explain."
Duende is a feeling that encompasses sadness, truth, creative
action, and absolute emotional integrity. It arises 'from the
blood,' from the inside. Perhaps the closest we can come in
English is "dark soul."

PGM NOTE : a DAVID PARSONS retrospective

INTRO: New Zealand musician DAVID PARSONS has had a unique and
fascinating musical career. In fact, you probably couldn't make it
up if you tried.
Back in the early 1960s, he was a jazz drummer, longing for
a more melodic instrument. Years before THE BEATLES brought the
sitar to pop music, PARSONS heard a recital in New Zealand by
RAVI SHANKAR. That was it. Inspired to make the sitar his new
instrument, he spent three years trying to get one imported into
New Zealand, then eight years teaching himself to play it. At
that point, he was ready to get serious!...and he made several
trips to India to study with one of the few female sitar masters,
KRISHNA CHAKRAVARTY.
In the late 1970s, fascinated by the sound of drones and long
tones, PARSONS discovered the connection between Indian music and
synthesizers...and began creating electronic-Indian music fusions.
In the late 1980s, he went digital, incorporating samples of
ethnic instruments and ambient sounds from his travels in Asia
(including the chanting & ceremonial instruments of Tibetan monks).
His record company hired him to document ethnic music, a project
that took him to exotic places like Iran, Armenia, Cambodia,
Vietnam, Bali, and Malaysia. Like many of these cultures, his own
music is rooted in India -- with the melodic construction of the
raga, the rhythmic cycles of the tala, and the extended,
contemplative space of the alap.

INTRO: The film WHALE RIDER uses the legend of Paikea, the whale
rider, to show the struggle to maintain New Zealand's indigenous
culture in the modern world. Australian singer and composer
LISA GERRARD created the unique cross-cultural score using native
Maori shell flutes and traditional Maori vocals, orchestral
strings and percussion. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE,
we remember the constantly changing relationship between ancient
and modern / tradition and progress.

=--------------------------------------------------------------------=
INTRO: The origins of the Native American flute are hazy and
still mysterious. Archeologists have found examples dating back
to 'basketmaker' times over 2000 years ago, but most believe the
cedar instrument we know today orginated in the American Southwest.
It was adopted by the Ute tribe in Utah in the 1850s; later it
spread south to Taos Pueblo, Pecos, Santa Fe, and finally to the
Plains tribes, where it was used for courting songs and while
traveling. Under pressure from modernization, the Native flute
all but died out in the early years of the 20th century, until it
was revived in the 1960s. Gentle, soulful, tinged with subtle
emotions, wisdom and experience, the sound of the Native American
flute has become more popular than ever.

INTRO: Of all the year's transformations, the autumn transit of

for it is during this period that humans must confront the reality
of death and decay. As the sun withdraws, the natural world withers
and dies, and we enter a gloomy realm attended by superstition,
fear and doleful emotions. These are the dark times that try our
souls. Yet in these ultimate tribulations, lie the seeds of
future growth.

INTRO: These days we have a new breed of classical composer that's
been called a "maverick." Not so much rebellious as individual,
unconcerned with either academic values or popular success, they
create their own worlds of sound and move freely within them.
Yet surprisingly, when given total artistic freedom, many of them
are drawn, like some mysterious dark gravity in physics, into the
orbit of ambient and contemplative music.
Take Japanese composer SOMEI SATOH for example: his music has
been called 'gendai Hogaku': contemporary traditional -- but it
sounds nothing like traditional Japanese music. Instead he brings
a Japanese sensibility to a more abstract, lyrical and original
style of expression with international influences. I'm STEPHEN HILL
and on this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, a program of new
contemplative classical music called SUSPENDED TIME.

Christian cultures has been associated with choral singing.
From Europe, the Caucausus, and Asia come voices sublime and

In the massed voices/ we hear an image of unity and peace;
in the heavenly harmonies/ the sound of angels, momentarily
brought to earth.
