Wave World - The Winds of Laax.nfo
GENERAL INFORMATION
=====================
Album: The Winds of Laax
Artist: Wave World (aka Harry Kessels, Gert van Santen, & Rolf van Slooten)
Year: 2005
Genre: New Age / Electronic / Ambient / Berlin School
DESCRIPTION
==================
Wave World is a remarkable Dutch trio who create space/ambient/Berlin School music depicting alien landscapes plus computer generated images of those landscapes to accompany the music when played live. These guys take the music and attendant themes seriously, so that the liner notes even contain quotes from the fictitious Book of Xyrrog. The liner notes also contain some stills from some of the fabulous CGI work. I should also point out that the tracks "Od Ban Ryaak" and "Sunrise at Yecekla" have been released on V/A albums.
The opening title track "The Winds of Laax" traverses a few styles and at over thirty minutes is the longest - but that's less than half of this massive album of close to eighty minutes! Initially we hear howling winds, twittering, and various bleepy and squawky noises that one could believe is the sound of alien creatures. Churchly sweeping chords then come in dramatic fashion as though we've been swept round the planet to behold an amazing sight. A quieter interlude of alien sounds and synth refrains then acts as a sonic bridge to an evolving rhythmic passage with thudding beats and squiggly melodies.
A particularly atmospheric track is "Desert Moons". Very airy flute kind of sounds start the piece as though a giant creature is trying to vocalise. An ominous drone then comes in quickly followed by what one imagines to be an alien instrument in the guise of a theremin. The next track "Sunrise at Yacekla" is also atmospheric, at least to start with when rumbling drones and winds form a dark and eerie scene. Eventually the piece develops into a rhythmic sequencing somewhat reminiscent of a Spanish style track on Klangwelt's The Age of Numbers. This section gets more insistent and has several melodies over its course, some more alien than others.
Bringing the album to a peaceful close is "The Holy Chamber" where suitably reverential synth lines perform a short meditation (for two and a half minutes) on whatever holiness is to be found in this fictional chamber.
Of the Wave World albums I've heard so far I would say that The Winds of Laax is their best; the title track is superb and practically a mini-album by itself. This is not only top notch electronic music, it's very evocative of what one imagines alien worlds to be like - different, intriguing, but not necessarily sinister. Highly recommended.
