Ken Martin - Spheres.nfo
GENERAL INFORMATION
=====================
Album: Spheres
Artist: Ken Martin
Year: 2005
Genre: New Age / Electronic / Ambient
DESCRIPTION
==================
Crashing laser fire sounds mix with very atmospheric cosmic effects to get 'Cloudance' underway. A slow mournful melody starts up then gradually subsides as more stellar whooshes and warbles emerge. A slow sequence can be heard very low in the mix as if the heart begins to pump again and we regain consciousness from our long sleep as we finish our journey through the very deepest darkest areas of the cosmos. A lovely lead line almost sings with the joy of homecoming. We float straight into 'Cathederals of Neptune' on twittering atmospherics then rather appropriately an organ sound takes over. As the track is so short it really only acts as an interlude before we seamlessly reach 'Tranquility'. I do wonder though whether the index point was put in the right place, as initially, despite the title, all is not peaceful for at least a minute into the piece. It is as if this small section belongs to the previous track, as there are decidedly dark undercurrents here and even some malevolent animal noises.
After this first minute or so, however, things do become much more serene and gently floating. Again the organ can be heard but it has a completely different feel to earlier, much more like something from Klaus Schulze's 'Irrlicht' or even 'Blackdance' actually! We drift into the title track and again there are weird animal noises. Melodic pads return once more along with the most prominent sequence on the album so far. It's as if we have woken from a nightmare, lovely little tuneful lead lines mixing with the sequence and pads to cool our fevered brow. The sound of thunder and then torrential rain is an interesting way to start a track called 'Blackholes'. Gradually things do become more cosmic with many a twitter and whoosh. A slow pulse can be heard in the deep distance. This really is atmospheric music of the very highest order. Soft string pads come in providing a little softness but also giving proceedings a rather film music quality.
Things become more dramatic as melodic motifs come and go in the middle of the mix and I thought we were building up to some dramatic event but instead the tension is held steady right until we transcend into the final track 'Rotation and Magnetism'. Again we are back in deep space. A sequence starts up but doesn't get too strident, just providing some structure around which delicate melodies weave. Not for the first time, it all had a rather dreamy feel. To sum up this isn't one of Ken's sequencer blasts but it is one of the best atmospheric 'Space Music' albums I have heard in quite some time.
