Unfairly panned, this one! This is one I return to often, and it never gets old. Sure, it's the more mainstream side of Namlook, but it's not overly derivative, and it's quite catchy and fun. The production is crisp and spotless, and still sounds fresh.
Track 3, "No Evidence" gives a nod to Orbital's Lush 3 with its ethereal female pseudo-singning. Track 5 is the most like old-school 4Voice 1. Track 6 is my favorite, with a deceivingly lame percussion layer build: you think it's going to be a clinker. Then it breaks at 2:00 and seems to get worse. Alarm bells? But then Pete gives us a wonderful trademark FAX long synth note sequence at 3:00. Cue the warm string/pad sweeps at 3:30. Got you yet? It will at 4:00 when the popcorn sequence echoes in. Bring it all together, mixing layers, for the remainder of the 9 minutes and you get one of my favorite beatful FAX tracks. Play it loud ,in the car, on the highway, at night: do it now!
My only complaint is Pete's nice guitar work on Shmooz doesn't really mesh with the electronics underneath, at least not like it does in Softwired on Wired or Koolfang 2. It just feels like two pleasant halves forced together into a mediocre whole. Five Stars. - tcordes on February 15, 2011
