Timeless is an album filled with warm and uplifting sounds. It's very relaxing, but also enjoyable. As the liner notes suggest it's focused on acoustic instruments, but it is by no means a typical "unplugged" work. Synthesizers still provide a warm ambient landscape to Goodall's serene music.
The use of soprano sax however is a bit unusual for his music, I think. It makes the music more like "new age" meets Kenny G (which is, as for me, not the best collusion!). However, there are still more typical Medwyn Goodall pieces, like the beautiful Gilded Autumn or South South West.
The lone vocal track, The Old Way, (quite controversial it seems!) is actually also very good IMO. It gives the album more Celtic feel, and a darker tone. However it might sound a bit out of place. The un-credited singer sings lines from the Scottish folk song Ailein Duinn, which was used by Capercaillie on the Rob Roy soundtrack. Goodall's rendition is different, interesting nonetheless. Melancholic and touching. Too bad the singer didn't get her credits.
All in all, this album sounds interesting, despite quite odd instrumentation. It also sounds very "sugar-coated" at times, which isn't what I like. But still Medwyn Goodall managed to make this album alluring and worth listening from time to time, when you feel like relaxing to warm, sort of "late summer" sounds. - Marcin De on 16 Mar. 2013
