In the Beginning Was the Invocation
Through words of power, seed syllables, deity calls, and divine utterances, all spiritual traditions use vocal invocation as a primordial gateway to transcendence. Through invocation, we call the spirit and divine attributes to be manifested. Invocation invites us to experience the profound expressiveness of the human voice, transforming an exhalation into a spiritual longing, and connecting us with the entire web of life and the sacred.
As a vocalist, voice-culturist, and voice educator, I realize that almost all musical traditions use invocation as an integral part of their repertoire of vocal arts. Invocations are the preliminary stage of every chanted spiritual practice, with the purpose of inducing a prayer, a meditative state, or a trance. In classical Indian music, invocation is the alap, conceived as the spreading of the substance of the raga, or melodic composition.
For me, invocation is the natural doorway to open myself to the mystery of musical inspiration. It prepares my sensibility for the suitable devotional feeling, such as affection, compassion, and gratitude. Invocation permeates my consciousness and my voice with confidence, wisdom, and the release of boundless radiance, openness, and love. Its subtle and slow variations help me to tune my auditory perception to fine microtones, making the experience of chanting intensely spiritual and revealing.
Each piece on this recording starts with an invocation that prepares and sets the mood. You will hear vocal invocations in a variety of styles from different traditions. Some sound like a prayer, others like a joyful call, a cry for peace, or a yearning for liberation through sound and sorrow.
By remembering the devotional nature of music, we open our hearts to the deep longing of the chant and become familiar with "the enchanters," those who journey through the magic of the song to attract the spirit power. - Silvia Nakkach
